BIOGRAPHY Lizzie Augusta Sander Allwardt (Sept 19, 1861 – Nov 2, 1946) Lizzie was born in Muscatine Iowa, where she received her schooling. For many years she resided in Iowa.
On 27 October 1881, Lizzie married William H. Allwardt (March 8, 1856 – Feb 18, 1922). The Muscatine County, Iowa Marriage Records, 1880-1910, on file at the Muscatine City Library includes an entry, "William Alwardt 27 October 1881 Elizabeth Sander".
Lizzie and William Allwardt had seven children, all born in US, first five in Muscatine, Iowa, and the last two in Ft Bragg California: 1) Johan Christian Allwardt, 16 Sep 1882 in Muscatine Iowa, died Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, CA 2) Walther Wilhelm Allwardt, 13 Jan 1884 in Muscatine Iowa, died Mar 23, 1923, in Chico following attack of accute appendicitis 3) Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons, Dec 9, 1885 in Muscatine Iowa, died July 21, 1945 married C Frank Simmons, 4) Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons 3 Apr 1887 in Muscatine Iowa, died 20 May 1954, married 17Oct 1908 to William Lewis Simmons (brother of CF Simmons) , 5) Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades, 24 Jan 1889 - 3 Oct1980 in Amador County, married 9Aug 13 to John C Rhoades
The Sander family remained on their farm in Sweetland Township for many years. In approximately 1887, Christian & Ida Sander retired from the farm and moved into the city of Muscatine and purchased a home.
The Sander brothers, Henry and William, were in Fort Bragg from at least 1897 (as reported by David Foucheaux, Vice President Board of Directors, Fort Bragg - Mendocino Coast Historical Society, 2013)
The Great Registry of Mendocino County (California), dated October 1890, included both the two youngest brothers of Lizzie, Henry R and William J, living in Fort Bragg, CA. Both are listed as having the occupation of carpenter. Neither was listed in the Sep 1888 register, so the brothers probably arrived in Mendocino County and Fort Bragg some time after 1888.
On 13 January 1890, Lizzie's mother, Ida Sander passed away at the home she shared with her husband of 30 years, Christian, at 802 East Ninth Street in Muscatine. As stated in the obituary at the time of Ida's passing, all the children, four sons and two daughters, reside here, save two of the youngest boys, who are now sojourning in California. The funeral is appointed for Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the German Baptist church, services conducted by Rev C.L. Marquardt.
Lizzie's elder brother, John, died 20 April 1890, just 3 months following the passing of his mother. He was buried in the Sander plot in Greenwood Cemetery along with his mother.
Sometime in 1890, soon after the passing of his wife, Lizzie's father, Christian, moved to Chicago and made his home in the German Baptist Old Friends' Home of Chicago.
A review of the local newspapers of Muscatine County during the period 1885 – 1890 turned up two articles in which William Allwardt is mentioned. The articles read: Muscatine Journal (Muscatine, Iowa), Monday, 24 November 1890, pg. 3 "Wm. Allwardt will hold a public sale Tuesday, December 2, at his home 1 mile south and ½ mile east of Sweetland (6 miles north-east of Muscatine.) Large amount of stock and farm utensils will be offered. Muscatine Weekly Journal (Muscatine, Iowa), Friday, 5 December 1890, pg. 4, col. 5, SWEETLAND "Wm. Allwardt and family departed for California yesterday." [3Dec1890]
In early December 1890, the William & Lizzie Allwardt family moved 2,000 miles to the remote seaside village of Fort Bragg on the north coast of California. Its likely that Lizzie's two brothers, Henry and William, living and working in Fort Bragg had much to do with the Allwardt family decision to leave Muscatine and move to Fort Bragg.
Beginning in late May 1890, Lizzie was pregnant with their sixth child. Her pregnancy likely influenced the means by which the Allwardts traveled to California. William and Lizzie's sixth child, Oliver was born 26 January 1891 in Fort Bragg.
We don't know how the family of seven with their belongings traveled to California. One option would have been via riverboat down the Mississippi, then travel by ship to Panama, crossing the isthmus via the Panama Railroad then north through the Pacific Ocean by steamship to San Francisco, perhaps even on to Fort Bragg. The most likely option for the Allwardt family was to ride the transcontinental railroad – the Union Pacific Railway to Sacramento. The Union Pacific, Council Bluffs, Iowa to Sacramento, had been in operation for 21 years, since 1869.
Lizzie lost a second brother just a few days after the Allwardts departed Muscatine, when Fredrick Sander died 6 December 1890, at age 27. He too was buried in the Sander plot in Greenwood Cemetery along with his mother and elder brother, John.
HISTORICAL FACT: Emigrants going west continued to use the Oregon Trail well into the 1890s. The transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, providing faster, safer, and usually cheaper travel east and west (the journey took seven days and cost as little as $65).
William & Lizzie Allwardt added two children to the family while in Fort Bragg 6) Oliver Hemerick Allwardt, Jan 26, 1891 in Fort Bragg,CA, died 20 Aug 1966, in Willows, CA of an apparent heart attack married 26 Sep 1919 to Elsie L Oliphant 7) Charles Carl Baldwin Allwardt, 21 May 1892 in Fort Bragg, died 21 April 1971 married Wood Margorie Tyrell Dec 28, 1916
*Lizzie had borne seven healthy children in a span of 9 years and eight months!
Lizzie's father, Christian, died 20 February 1903 in Chicago. His remains were brought to Muscatine by train. Christian was buried in Muscatine's Greenwood Cemetery on 23 Feb 1903, along side his wife, Ida, and sons, Johann and Fredrick.
Lizzie's brother Henry Sander of Fort Bragg age 27 years 2 month and 16 days died of Brights Disease (kidney Disease) 21 January 1892 in Fort Bragg. He is buried in the local cemetery, Rose Memorial Park.
On 17 February 1893, in Fort Bragg, Lizzie's sister, Lena Ida Carry Sander, married a Fort Bragg local, Douglas A. Hare. On 4 September 1895, Lena gave birth to a son, Ralph M. in Fort Bragg. 2 ½ years later on 6 February 1898, Lena gave birth to a daughter, Ethel B. Lena and Douglas remained married 35 years - until the death of Lena in San Francisco on 21 June 1928.
Lizzie's brother William married Nellie A. Ayer of Fresno in Fresno, CA 7 January 1894. The couple lived in Fort Bragg. On 28 February 1895, a daughter was born to the wife of William J. Sander. W J Sander was in the hardware/ undertaking business with a Mr. Hare from January 1897 to February 1902. They had a hardware store and undertaking business (this was a common practice at the time for hardware stores to also do undertaking). W J sold out in February 1904 and moved to Los Angeles. (David Foucheaux, Vice President Board of Directors, Fort Bragg - Mendocino Coast Historical Society)
The Allwardt family moved to Chico, CA from Ft Bragg in 1899 and Mr Allwardt secured a position on the Bidwell ranch. He soon became gardener about the Bidwell Mansion grounds and for many years worked under Mrs Bidwell's supervision in cultivating the beautiful flowers and shrubbery of the grounds. After Mrs Bidwell's death in 1918, Mr Allwardt continued as gardener until his stroke.
