Read More	Updated 17 January 2021 At the time of Oliver’s passing, an obituary appeared in the Chico Enterprise-Record. “Oliver (Slim) Allwardt Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Brusie Funeral Home Wednesday at 10 a.m. for Oliver (Slim) Henry Allwardt of Butte City, who died at Willows on Saturday afternoon. Allwardt was born in Fort Bragg and moved to Chico with his parents, Mr & Mrs William Allwardt, as a youngster. He received his early schooling in Chico. From 1910 until 1912 he was employed by the Chico Police Department, At that time he joined the Chico Fire Department and remained until 1917, when he moved to Silver City, N.M. where he was with the sheriff’s office. Shortly thereafter, Allwardt returned to Chico and went back to the local police department and later to the fire department. In 1926, he went to work for the Packard Ranch in Princeton where he remained for four years. He then was employed by the state highway maintenance department in the Butte City Division. He had been at the Butte City warehouse for the past few years. Allwardt was stricken with an apparent heart attack while he was working and was rushed to Glenn General Hospital in Willows where he was pronounced dead. Survivors include his widow, Mrs Elsie Allwardt of Butte City; the following children, William of Yuba City, Mrs Gladys Williams of Butte City, Mrs Irene Hanschu of Chico and Donald Allwardt of Richmond; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister Mrs Effie Rhodes of Jackson, and a brother Charles Allwardt of Hayward. Cremation will take place following the services.” His PARENTS: Oliver’s father, William H. Allwardt, (Mar 8, 1856 – Feb 18, 1922) was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on March 8, 1856, the son of John and Heiden Caroline Allwardt. William came to the US when he was 16 years old (about 1872). On 2 January 1877, William became a naturalized citizen of the USA, occupation farmer. For many years William resided in Iowa. In 1881, William married Lizzie Augusta Sander Oliver’s mother, Lizzie Augusta Sander Allwardt (Sep 19, 1861 – Nov 2, 1946) was born in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of Christian Sander (born Dec 25, 1819 in Otkfrazen Kosrich, Hanover, Germany). On May 15, 1859, Christian married Ida Echoff in Sweetland Township, Muscatine, Iowa. Ida Echoff was born March 14, 1839 in Manstate, Holstine, Germany. Lizzie and William Allwardt had seven children, all born in US, the first five in Muscatine, Iowa, and the last two in Ft Bragg California: 1) Johan Christian Allwardt, born 16 September 1882 in Muscatine Iowa. died Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, CA 2) Walther Wilhelm Allwardt was born 13 January 1884 in Muscatine Iowa, died March 23, 1923, in Chico following attack of accute appendicitis. 3) Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons, Dec 9, 1885 in Muscatine Iowa, died July 21, 1945; married C Frank Simmons, 4) Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons 3 Apr 1887 in Muscatine Iowa, died 20 May 1954; married 17Oct 1908 to William Lewis Simmons (brother of CF Simmons). 5) Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades, 24 Jan 1889 -? ; married 9Aug 13 to John C Rhoades. Oliver’s parents, William & Lizzie Allwardt, added two children to the family while in Fort Bragg 6) Oliver Hemerick.Allwardt, Jan 26, 1891in Fort Bragg,CA, died 20 Aug 1966, in Willows, CA of an apparent heart attack; married 26 Sep 1919 to Elsie L Oliphant. 7) Carl Baldwin Allwardt, 21 May 1892 in Fort Bragg, died ?; married Wood Margorie Tyrell Dec 28, 1916. BIOGRAPHY: Oliver “Slim” spent the first eight years of his life with his family in the town of Fort Bragg on the north coast of California. The family moved to the Sacramento Valley and Chico, CA from Ft Bragg in 1899. Mr Allwardt secured a position as gardener of the Bidwell Mansion grounds. Significant Events during the years the Allwardt family lived in Chico: April 4, 1900. General John Bidwell died and was buried in the Chico Cemetery. In 1902, Chico High School is founded. 1905, Annie Bidwell donates 2500 acres of land to Chico to become Bidwell Park 1905, Street cars started running in Chico March 1905, the Majestic Theater on 2d street opened to the public (later renamed to El Ray Theater). March 1905, the Carnegie Library at the corner of Salem and West 2d Street opens. 1913, Enloe Hopital opens March 19, 1918, Annie Bidwell dies and is buried with her husband in the Chico Cemetery “As the Census of 1910 [would] reveal, more than ten million of America’s ninety-two million people had emigrated from Germany or had one or two parents from Germany or Austria-Hungary.” Page 564, A Diplomatic History of the American People, by Thomas A. Bailey Oliver’s first wife, Henrietta passed away in 1917. 22November 1918, the Chico Enterprise newspaper, pg 5, column 2, included the following article FORMER POLICEMAN IS DEPUTY SHERIFF Oliver H (Slim) Allwardt, formerly a member of the Chico Police Department, and now a deputy sheriff of Grant county, New Mexico, is renewing acquaintances in Chico today. Slim went to New Mexico in April, 1916, on account of his wife’s health and located in Hurley where he still resides. He says things are rather quiet in the silver mining communities and that he was called here by the death of his brother-in-law, Frank Simmons. He will return to Ukiah after the funeral services to care for his sister, Mrs. Simmons, who, with her two children, are very ill. Oliver later married Elsie L. Oliphant on January 30, 1924. Oliver and Elsie had two children, a daughter - Irene and son – Donald. Their grandchildren included two children of daughter Irene & Roland Hanschu, which are: Patricia Hanschu (& Carl) Foreman of Woodland, and Kathleen Hanschu (& Ernie) Hillman of Chico. Oliver died 20 Aug 1966 in Willows of heart attack. He was buried in the Allwardt Plot in the Chico Cemetery.
