A 21-year resident f Amador County with her son Walter Rhoades of Jackson, Mrs Rhoades has spent the greater part of her life in Shasta County where she as a teacher and a matron for the Shasta County Juvenile Detention Home. In addition to Walter Rhoades, Mrs Rhoades is survived by another son, Oliver C. Rhoades of Sater Creek. She is survived by five grandchildren, John Rhoades of Ione, Sylvia Dalman of Pioneer, Larry Rhoades of Ione, Harry Rhoades of Sutter Creek and Serena Kohler of Sutter Creek. Mrs Rhoades also leaves 16 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be sent to the Jackson United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.” PARENTS: Effie’s father, William H. Allwardt, (Mar 8, 1856 – Feb 18, 1922) was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on March 8, 1856, the son of John and Heiden Caroline Allwardt. William came to the US when he was 16 years old (about 1872). On 2 January 1877, William became a naturalized citizen of the USA, occupation farmer. For many years William resided in Iowa. In 1881, William married Lizzie Augusta Sander. Effie’s mother, Lizzie Augusta Sander Allwardt (Sep 19, 1861 – Nov 2, 1946) was born in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of Christian Sander (born Dec 25, 1819 in Otkfrazen Kosrich, Hanover, Germany) and Ida (Echoff) Sander. Lizzie and William Allwardt had seven children, all born in US, the first five in Muscatine, Iowa, and the last two in Ft Bragg California: 1) Johan Christian Allwardt, born 16 September 1882 in Muscatine; died 13 Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, CA. 2) Walther Wilhelm Allwardt, born 13 January 1884 in Muscatine; died 23 Mar 1923, in Chico. 3) Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons Banta, born 9 December 1885 in Muscatine; died 21 Jul 1945 in San Francisco. 4) Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons, born 3 April 1887 in Muscatine; died 20 May 1954. 5) Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades, born 24 January 1889 in Muscatine; died 3 October 1980. 6) Oliver Hemerick.Allwardt, born 26 January 1891in Fort Bragg,CA; died 20 Aug 1966 in Willows, CA. 7) Charles Carl Baldwin Allwardt, born 21 May 1892 in Fort Bragg; died 21 April 1971in Alameda, CA. BIOGRAPHY: Effie spent the first year of her life in Muscatine, until in 1890, when the family moved from Iowa to California, settling in the town of Fort Bragg on the north coast of California. The family was likely encouraged to move to Fort Bragg by Lizzie’s two younger brother’s both of whom had settled in Fort Bragg in 1888. When Effie was ten years of age, her family of nine moved to Chico, CA in 1899. Her father, Mr Allwardt secured a position as gardener of the Bidwell Mansion grounds. Significant Events during the years the Allwardt family lived in Chico: 1900, Population of Chico was recorded as 4,739. April 4, 1900. General John Bidwell died and was buried in the Chico Cemetery. 1902, Chico High School was founded. 1905, Annie Bidwell donated 2500 acres of land to Chico to become Bidwell Park. 1905, Street cars started running in Chico. March 1905, the Majestic Theater on 2d street opened to the public (now know as the El Ray Theater). March 1905, the Carnegie Library opened at the corner of Salem and West 2d Street. 1913, Enloe Hospital opened. March 19, 1918, Annie Bidwell died and was buried with her husband in the Chico Cemetery. “As the Census of 1910 [would] reveal, more than ten million of America’s ninety-two million people had emigrated from Germany or had one or two parents from Germany or Austria-Hungary.” Page 564, A Diplomatic History of the American People, by Thomas A. Bailey Effie married John Calvin Rhoades on 9 August 1913. Effie and John had two sons, Oliver C. and Walter N. 1930 US Federal Census included about the Rhoades family: John C. age 42, Effie R.-41, and sons: Oliver C -12 and Walter N.- 6. Home is Township 6, Shasta, CA. 7 March 1940, Effie’s husband for 26 years, John Calvin Rhoades, passed away. 1940 US Federal Census included: Effie R Rhoades, age 51, widowed; home on Whitmore Road in Shasta County. Highest grade completed: 2nd year of college. Sons: Oliver C – 22, and Walter N – 16. In 1946 at the time of death of her mother, Lizzie, the obituary for Lizzie included that she was survived by her daughter Effie Rhoades of Redding, CA. In the mid to late 1960s, Effie spent a few days annually in Chico with the family of her nephew, Wilton “Bud” Simmons, the son of Effie’s sister, Ida. Effie lived at 1147 Argonaut Lane, Jackson, Amador County, California. In the late 1970s, Effie was employed for five years as matron at Juvenile Hall, Shasta County, per the certificate of death, Amador County. Effie passed away on 3 October 1980, at age 91, in Kit Carson Convalescent Hospital, in Jackson, of cardiac arrest and renal failure. Effie was cremated and interred along-side her husband at the Whitmore Evangelical Cemetery, block 6, Lot 2, Plot 7. This cemetery is operated by the Millville Cemetery District in Millville, CA. DIRECTIONS: Take I-5 to Redding, turn at the Hwy 44 East/Mt Lassen exit, drive east (toward Mt Lassen) approximately 15 miles and turn left (north) toward Millville. You are now on old Hwy 44 drive and will come to a 3-way stop. Turn right on to Whitmore Road. Drive approximately 15 miles to Whitmore; continue on Whitmore Road, which becomes Tamarack Road. Continue to Bateman Road (on the right, as leave tree line). Turn right (south) on to Bateman Road. Continue south on Bateman road approx 1/2 mile to intersection of Old Bateman Road and Bateman Road 90 degree turn. Don’t take this turn, but continue straight on to Cemetery Road. Continue approximately 500 feet to the cemetery, on the left (east). When enter the main gate of Whitmore Evangelical Cemetery go to the 10 o’clock position toward the large cedar tree. Grave of Effie and John C Rhoades is near the cedar tree; Block 6, Lot 2, Plot 7.
