Charles’ mother, Lizzie Augusta Sander Allwardt (Sep 19, 1861 – Nov 2, 1946) was born in Muscatine, Iowa the daughter of Christian Sander (born Dec 25, 1819 in Otkfrazen Kosrich, Hanover, Germany) and Ida (Echoff) Sander. Lizzie and William Allwardt had seven children, all born in US, the first five in Muscatine, Iowa, and the last two in Ft Bragg California: 1) Johan Christian Allwardt, born 16 September 1882 in Muscatine; died 13 Apr 13, 1902 in Chico, CA. 2) Walther Wilhelm Allwardt, born 13 January 1884 in Muscatine; died 23 Mar 1923, in Chico. 3) Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons Banta, born 9 December 1885 in Muscatine; died 21 Jul 1945 in San Francisco. Buried in Chico. 4) Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons, born 3 April 1887 in Muscatine; died 20 May 1954. Buried in Chico. 5) Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades, born 24 January 1889 in Muscatine; died 3 October 1980. BIOGRAPHY: Charles spent the first years of his life in Fort Bragg, where the family had moved from Muscatine, IA in 1890. Fort Bragg is a small town on the north coast of California. The family was likely encouraged to move from Muscatine to Fort Bragg by Lizzie’s two younger brothers, both of whom had settled in Fort Bragg in 1888. When Charles was about 7 years old, his family of nine moved to Chico, CA in 1899. His father, Mr Allwardt, secured a position as gardener of the Bidwell Mansion grounds. Significant Events during the years the Allwardt family lived in Chico: 1900, Population of Chico was recorded as 4,739. 4 April 1900. General John Bidwell died and was buried in the Chico Cemetery. 1902, Chico High School was founded. 1905, Annie Bidwell donated 2500 acres of land to Chico to become Bidwell Park. 1905, Street cars started running in Chico. March 1905, the Majestic Theater on 2d street opened to the public (in 1960 known as El Ray Theater). March 1905, the Carnegie Library opened at the corner of Salem and West 2d Street. On 13 April 1902, Charles’ elder brother, John, died in Chico at age 19. John was buried in Chico Cemetery. “As the Census of 1910 [would] reveal, more than ten million of America’s ninety-two million people had emigrated from Germany or had one or two parents from Germany or Austria-Hungary.” Page 564, A Diplomatic History of the American People, by Thomas A. Bailey 1910 US Federal Census reflects that Charles, age 17, is living with his parents in their home on 5th Ave in Chico: William age 53, Lizzie 49, Walter 26, Effie 21 and Oliver 19. 1913, Enloe Hospital opened. On 28 December 1916, at age 24, Charles Baldwin Allwardt married Marjorie Tyrell Wood, age 20, at Oroville, Ca. Marjorie was born in 1893 in Iowa to her parents, J.B. Wood of Missouri and Victoria (Griswold) Wood of Iowa. At the time of their marriage, Marjorie listed her occupation as telephone operator. [Image 474, California, County Marriages, 1850-1952, FamilySearch] 19 March 1918, Annie Bidwell died and was buried with her husband in the Chico Cemetery. 1920 US Federal Census included: Charles age 27, living in Hayward, CA, along with his spouse, Marjorie, age 23 (birthplace Iowa). Charles’ occupation is driver. Charles lost his father on 18 February 1922 when William H Allwardt passed away in Chico. On 23 March 1923, Charles lost another older brother when Walter passed away at age 39 in Chico. He was buried in Chico Cemetery. 28 November 1923, a baby girl, Shirley Ann, was born to Marjorie and Charles. 1930 US Federal Census includes the family living in Eden Township in Alameda, CA; Charles, Marjorie and their child, Shirley – age 6. 1940 US Federal Census included: Charles at age 47 is the head of household and owner of the home at 19378 Stanton Ave. Wife is Marjorie. His occupation is truck driver and highest grade completed: 8th grade. There is a child, Shirley Allwardt – age 16. Charles lost a third sibling on 21 July 1945 when his eldest sister, Ida Caroline (Allwardt) Simmons Banta, died at age 60 in San Francisco. Ida was buried in Chico Cemetery. In 1946 at the time of death of his mother, Lizzie, the obituary for Lizzie included that she was survived by her son, Charles Allwardt of Oakland, CA, as well as Mrs Hulda Simmons of Oroville, Mrs Effie Rhoads of Redding, and O.H. Allwardt of Butte City; and 15 grandchildren and 16 great grand-children. On 4 October 1946, Charles & Marjorie’s daughter, Shirley (a former Castro Valley girl) married Ensign, US Navy, Mark Fowlkes (from Union City, Tenn) at Laurel Methodist church in Oakland. They will make their home in Seattle, WA, where he will be stationed. Source: Hayward Review, 26 Oct 1946, pg 3. Charles occupation of 25 years was truck driver for Crown Zellerbach. A 2nd sister of Charles, Hulda Sophia (Allwardt) Simmons passed away 20 May 1954. She too was buried in Chico Cemetery. His usual residence was listed as 4338 Tompkins Ave in Oakland. Charles passed away on 21 April 1971, at age 78, while in the care of Oakridge Convalescent Hospital in Oakland, and after having spent the past 50 years living in Alameda County. The death certificate obtained from the Clerk-Recorder of the county of Alameda lists as the cause of death cardiac failure and arteriosclerotic heart disease. Charles was cremated the following day and interred at Mountain View Memorial Park & Crematory Main Mausoleum, niche M80, Tier #5. He was survived by his wife, Marjorie T. (Wood) Allwardt, his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Ann (Allwardt) Mitchell of Sugar Land, TX, and his his lone surviving sibling, elder sister, Effie Rebecca (Allwardt) Rhoades. DIRECTIONS: Enter Mountain View Memorial Park on Piedmont Ave. Charles’ ashes are interred in the Main Mausoleum, which is approximately 150 yards east of the cemetery office on Main Avenue; at the west end (closest to the office) of the mausoleum, niche M80 (M Eight Oh), Tier #5 (at the top). Tier numbers are inscribed along the floor, just below tier #1 of each niche. Enter the double doors at the west end of the Mausoleum, continue approximately 10 feet, the hallway turns to the left, and then back to the right. "M80" is on the left (north side of hallway).
