ORANGEVILLE BANNER-3 November 1910: ******************************** Mrs. Gray, widow of the late Robert Gray, age 85, one of the early and most respected residents of Amaranth Township, passed away at her home near Laurel on Friday October 21. Deceased lady had been in poor health for some time and her death was therefore not unexpected. Mr. and Mrs. Gray were among the first settlers in their locality and experienced their share of the hardships and privations that were the common lot of the early settlers. She was a woman who possessed fine traits of character, with which was united a kind and sympathetic nature. She was an excellent neighbor and was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need or distress. Deceased lady was a member of the Methodist Church and was a sincere Christian woman, who truly loved and revered her Maker. Mrs. Gray was much beloved by her family and a large circle of friends for her uniform kindness and her lovely Christian character and will be much missed by them. AUTHERSON GENEALOGY: ******************* Warter was the home parish of the Autherson and Richardson families. Between the years 1844 and 1860, many of the Autherson and Richardson families emigrated from England to Canada. At least one reason for the move was a depression affecting the farming industry in England at the time. This caused poverty for many farmers; which, combined with the high level of publicity about Canada as the place to find land, made the choice of emigrating to Canada a natural one. In England, most of the Authersons and Richardsons were either farmers or yeoman, although none of them owned land. They leased their farms. In 1839 John Autherson had taken over the farm lease when his father, Richard died. His sisters, Ann, Elizabeth, and Mary, remained on the farm with John. The 1841 census lists the Autherson farm at Warter Wold, an area north of the village and adjacent to the village of Millington. The census indicates the farm was extensive and had a staff of seven servants. When the drop in farm prices started about 1844, the Autherson farm was severely affected, as a tenant farmer had a good income as long as he farmed, but once he had to give up the farming, he had no equity in the land and no further income from it. By the 1851 census, John had been forced to to leave the farm and was living in the village of Warter as an agricultural laborer; his brothers, William and Thomas are with him there. His mother and two sisters [Ann Banks and Elizabeth Gray] had emigrated to Canada. Family stories indicate that the Autherson family had been financially affluent, that Ann was educated at home by private tutors; she and Elizabeth, had fluent handwriting. At the time of Elizabeths' marriage in 1844 to Robert Gray, both are listed as farm servants.
