Mrs. DU BOIS was unquestionably one of the earliest settlers of the Mississippi Valley, having moved with her father, Stephen DILL, from Tennessee to Illinois in June, 1820, within 20 miles of Burlington, Iowa, then called Flint Hills. DU BOIS, Sr., on the morning of the Fourth of July. Mrs. DU BOIS was unquestionably one of the earliest settlers of the Mississippi Valley, having moved with her father, Stephen DILL, from Tennessee to Illinois in June, 1820, within 20 miles of Burlington, Iowa, then called Flint Hills. She would have been 63 years of age on the 12th of this month. She died in the triumph of a living faith in Christ, her Redeemer. Her funeral discourse was delivered by J. T. Johnson, of Ottumwa, of the Christian Church, of which she was a member for 45 years. Elder Johnson was assisted in the discharge of his solemn duty by Bro. Frank Evans, of the First M. E. Church, of Fairfield. She was followed to the cemetery by a large concourse of neighbors and friends. Perhaps no lady ever exercised a greater influence over her children, seven of whom still survive her -- five sons and two daughters -- and perhaps no mother was ever more missed from the family circle than her. -- Mrs. DU BOIS possessed an eminent degree of those qualities that constitute the character of a good, a true, a faithful wife and mother. We are glad to know that the aged husband, J. W. DU BOIS, Sr., and the family, have the sympathies of the entire community. ------- An unidentified (or not logged in member) visitor sent the following message on June 11, 2011. It is being added 'as is': "Hello. She was born in Tennessee according to the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 census records. She also had a son named Corneleous Dubois that is not listed in the 1860 census but is listed in the 1870 and 1880 census in the home of John W. Dubois and his wife Elizabeth. The birthdate I have for Corneleous is 1859 but do not know why he is not listed in the 1860 census. I hope you will add this information to the memorial of Elizabeth Dill Dubois." -------- Update: according to her husband's obituary, she was born in White county, TN. so this memorial is being updated to that effect. Keep in mind that there can be conflicting census and other records that make establishing firm date and locations difficult. Various researchers can find various sources and have perspectives that conflict so researchers should use caution with their research. Headstone names and dates can sometimes be engraved wrong as well. Iowa did not mandate birth and death records until 1880, and compliance even then was iffy, so not all dates can be verified. -------- Update: May 25, 2012 - another 'visitor' SAC'd that a son of Elizabeth was "Samuel Cornelius Dubois"; leading to Samuel Dubois .
