Read More	Her surname in Vienna was spelled Pahs but changed to Pass in the U.S. Oral history by her daughter Ella Hofemann Adams: "My mother, Elizabeth Helen Pahs (spelled Pass after they came here) was born in Vienna, Austria in 1882 to Carl and Helen Pahs. When she was 2 or 3 years old, her mother died in childbirth. The baby only lived a short time. At age 5 she came to the US. Her father had remarried. They went to the Crandon area where her stepmother had relatives. She grew up on a farm a short distance east of the farm we lived on. She attended school and spoke, read and wrote German and English. She attended a sewing class in Huron and sewed her wedding dress. She married in 1903 and had 9 children. On the farm she always took care of the baby chickens and had a one acre garden with many vegetables, grape vines, gooseberry and currant bushes and always many flowers. She was always active in church events. World War II was a difficult time for her. She was alone. Her youngest sons were overseas. The 2 youngest were killed; Martin in Italy and Earl in France. Clarence came home after several years in Italy and North Africa. My mother died August 25, 1957, 6 days after her 75th birthday. The Christmas season was a very special season for us when we were young. I especially remember the church program we took part in and my Uncle August always lit the candles on the tree that almost reached the ceiling. My mother made candy and cookies. Everyone had several toys and there was a pretty decorated tree at home." Income on the farm - in the spring sheep were sheared and the wool was sold. Every year several mother sheep rejected their babies. When we were kids we had several lambs to bottle feed. At harvest time corn and grain was sold, later cattle, sheep and hogs were sold. Five or six cows were milked and the cream sold, there were always eggs to sell. In the summer the grain was cut and tied in bundles by machine. Then men would set 5 or 6 ripe bundles in a 'shock'. When the grain was dry the threshers came with a threshing machine and a crew of men. Some men hauled the bundles to the threshing machine and some hauled the grain to the elevator in Tulare where it was sold. Neighbor women came to help cook for the men. In about 1926 or 1927 the men were paid a dollar a day. My mother lived for 23 years after my father died. She had income to live independently all those years. When she died all 7 remaining children inherited some money. I am sure there was always enough income to pay all bills. She was called Lizzie by all her friends." Elizabeth moved from the farm to Tulare after her husband's death. When her son Clarence came back from WWII, she moved from town back to the original Hofemann farm south of Tulare with him. She lived there with Clarence until she moved to her son Ernest's farm 2-3 months before she died. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at Ernest's house at age 75. She was a faithful member of the Salem Evangelical and Reform Church of Tulare, a charter member of the Salem Women's Guild, a member of the Garfield Extension Club, the (American) Legion Auxillary and a Gold Star Mother. Aberdeen Daily News, Aug. 28, 1957 Hofemann Rites To Be At Tulare (American-News Dakota News Service) Tulare - Services for Elizabeth H. Hofemann, near Tulare, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Salem Evangelical Church in Tulare. The Rev. Robert Anderson will officiate and burial will be in Tulare Cemetery. Mrs. Hofemann, 82, died Sunday at the home of her son, Carl, of Tulare. She was born Aug. 19, 1882 in Vienna Austria. Survivors include three sons, Carl, Ernest and Clarence, all of Tulare; four daughters, Mrs. Ralph Schnittgrund, San Bruno, Calif; Mrs. Martha Burger, Tampa, Fla.; and Mrs. Ella Adams, Compton, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her husband, Ernest, two sons and one grandchild preceded her in death. The Coleman Funeral Home of Redifield is in charge of arrangements. She died at the farm of her son Ernest.
