Description	:	Ernst Hofemann was born 28 Sep. 1869 in the Principality of Lippe (now North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) at #14 Leese, a village on the outskirts of the Hanseatic City of Lemgo, the son of Johann Heinrich Conrad Hofemann and Caroline Florentine Henriette Schafmeister. At age 19 he departed Germany at Bremen in Feb. 1888 bound for New York, Philadelphia and then to South Dakota where his older brother, August, had settled in 1886. SD, eventually owning the farm and 2 sections of land in Garfield Twp. 3-4 miles south of Tulare. He married Elizabeth Helen Pahs (changed to Pass in the US) 19 Jun. 1903 at Tulare. They had five sons and four daughters. His obituary reads: March 11, 1934 Ernest Hofemann Dies on Sunday Tulare and community was deeply grieved Sunday when it learned that Ernest Hofemann, well known citizen, had passed away at a Redfield hospital after a few days illness from pneumonia. He was 65 years, 5 months and 23 days old. Ernest Hofemann was born in Lemgo in the province of Lippe, Germany, on September 28, 1869. In the year of 1888 he came to America to make his home near Tulare. He was married to Elizabeth Pass of Tulare. Together they established their home on a farm three miles southwest of the town, where they lived until about three years ago, when they moved to town, where they resided ever since. He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. He has served on school boards and took an active interest in the building of the community. On last Friday morning he was taken to the Baldwin Hospital in Redfield with a badly infected lung. Pneumonia with other complications set in and his body yielded to these small and powerful forces. Mr. Hofemann leaves a devoted wife, four daughters, Martha of Mankato Minnesota, Mrs. Ralph Schnittgrund of Redfield and Bertha and Ella who are at home and five sons, Carl, who lives on the home farm, Ernest of Shafter California and Clarence, Martin and Earl, who are at home.
