Description	:	Martin's father died when he was 14. He completed high school at Tulare, SD and then completed courses at Mankato Business College at Mankato, MN. At the outbreak of WW II he enlisted in the Army and entered into active duty on 23 Feb. 1943, at Fort Snelling, MN. He was trained at Camp Wolters, TX, and shipped overseas 25 Jul. 1943. Read More	Martin's father died when he was 14. He completed high school at Tulare, SD and then completed courses at Mankato Business College at Mankato, MN. At the outbreak of WW II he enlisted in the Army and entered into active duty on 23 Feb. 1943, at Fort Snelling, MN. He was trained at Camp Wolters, TX, and shipped overseas 25 Jul. 1943. In Italy on 20 Jan. 1944, his unit began crossing a river to attack the Nazis on the other side, while under heavy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire. The award reads: "Advancing in the face of over-whelming enemy fire, he and the others crossed the river and moved valiantly toward their objective." Private First Class Martin Hofemann was killed leading the charge. For his heroism he was awarded the nation's second highest military honor, the Silver Cross. The American Legion Post in Tulare, SD is named after Martin and his brother Earl who died in action in WW II in France. Lest we forget why our freedoms have never been free . . .
