Auburn. The funeral services for the late Mrs. Joppa Jenks, of Mt. Auburn, were held at the Methodist church in that village last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. Trimble, assisted by Rev. Fisher. The church was crowded with the friends and relatives of the departed. The interment was in the Mt. Auburn cemetery. The death of Mrs. Jenks Friday morning marked the passing away of one of the early pioneers of Iowa. She was 82 years of age at the time of her death. She was born in Janesville, Ohio in 1830. Her parents came to Iowa in 1839 and she has been a resident of the state since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Jenks were among the early pioneers of Benton county and went through all the vicissitudes of the early pioneer life. Mrs. Jenks took care of the farm and children while Mr. Jenks faithfully served his country during the civil war. No hearts were larger than the hearts of the early pioneers of this county and Mr. and Mrs. Jenks were always noted for their great-heartedness and hospitality. No stranger was ever turned from their doors. She was a genuine mother. Surviving her are her husband, one of the gallant veterans of Benton county, and seven children, viz; William Jenks, of Chicago, Mrs. Ella Frink, and Mrs. Jose Bearbower, of Brandon, James Jenks, of Mt. Auburn, Jerome Jenks and Mrs. Susan Ackles, of Waterloo. She is survived by 25 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Obituary contributed by: colette harrison
