Mr. Jenks was well known throughout the state as a leader of the Joppa Jenks Drum corps, and no veterans reunion in this part of the country was complete without his presence. His memory will be cherished by many friends and associates. He is survived by seven children: Jerome Jenks of Clarksville; James Jenks of Mt. Auburn; William Jenks of La Porte City; Miss Hannah Watson, Waterloo; Mrs. Jas. Bearbower, Mt. Auburn; Mrs. Ella Frink, Brandon; Mrs. Susan McLaughlin, Waterloo. Funeral services will be held from the Mt. Auburn Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Trimble officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Auburn cemetery. WAR VETERAN IS NUMBERED WITH DEAD Joppa Jenks, Who Had Lived Here Sixty-one Years, Breathed Last Sunday at Mt. Auburn Home. After months of failing health and a great deal of suffering Joppa Jenks, one of the county's earliest settlers, died Sunday morning at his home in Mt. Auburn. He was 82 years old the 25th of last June and death was caused by the ailments of old age. Mr. Jenks is known throughout Benton county as the leader and originator of the Joppa Jenks drum corps. No gathering of old soldiers in the county was complete without Joppa Jenks and the reunion held here this fall, the absence of Mr. Jenks was regretted by all his comrades. It was the first occasion of the kind in the county that he failed to attend. He was not able to leave his bed at the time. Mr. Jenks served three years in the war of the rebellion as a member of the 28th Iowa. He received an honorable discharge from the service and returned to his home in the locality. As a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the leader of the Joppa Jenks drum corps he was known throughout the state. Funeral at the M. E. Church The funeral will be held from the Methodist church at Mt. Auburn tomorrow, Tuesday, afternoon. Rev. Trimble will conduct the services and the body will be laid to rest in the Mt. Auburn cemetery. Joppa Jenks came to Benton county in 1854. He was born at Erie, pa., June 25th 1833. For many years he lived on his farm three miles northwest of this city and twelve years ago retired to Mt. Auburn. His wife was called away three years ago and since that time he had made his home and been cared for by his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Bearbower. There are seven children surviving, Wm. Jenks of La Porte City, James Jenks of Mt. Auburn, Mrs. Hannah Watson of Waterloo, Mrs. Ella Frink of Brandon, Mrs. James Bearbower of Mt. Auburn, Jerome Jenks of Clarksville and Mrs. Susan McLaughlin of Waterloo. There are twenty-five grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. The memory of Joppa Jenks will long live in the hearts of his old comrades and associates. He was possessed of a kindly nature an made many friends. Cedar Valley Times.
