Etna vicinity, passed away Sunday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of her eldest child, Mrs. Sarah Houch, in northwest Corning, where, for a number of years she had made her home. The funeral was held at the Mt. Etna Church of the Brethren Thursday at 2 o'clock, the services being in charge of the pastor, Rev. Leslie S. Cover. Interment was made in the Dunkard cemetery beside her husband, who died January 30, 1899. Elizabeth Morton was born near Brandonville, Preston County, Va., July 25, 1826, and was aged 91 years, 9 months and 24 days. She grew to womanhood in the locality of her birth and was united in marriage to Harrison H. Powell March 10, 1842. They resided in that vicinity a year when they removed to Grant County, Indiana, residing there until 1852, when they emigrated to Mt. Etna, Iowa, coming overland in the usual manner in the early days. They purchased a farm in Washington Township where they lived until the death of the husband, since when Mrs. Powell has been making her home with her children. Deceased was a well educated woman in her time, and was one of the best posted students of the bible in this locality. Many, many times had she read the book of books, as she termed it, and with no hesitation would cite you to anything you might inquire about in regard to the bible. Since a young woman she had been an energetic worker in her chosen church, the Dunkards, and was a firm believer in the teachings of the organization. During the past few months Mrs. Powell gradually lost her brain power, and was once more a child and was a great care to those taking care of her. She leaves the following children: Mrs. Sarah Houck, Corning; W.P. Powell, Moore, Mont.; J.S. Powell in Oklahoma; Harrison Powell in North Dakota; S.T. Powell, Rouleau, Sask., Canada; Mrs. Ida Ellenwood of Maxwell, Nebr.; Mrs. Candace McKenzie of Washington Township. The children were all present at the funeral except J.S. and Harrison, who were traveling and could not be located. Also a niece, Mrs. Ida Smelser of Ottumwa, was present. Besides her children the aged lady left thirty-five grandchildren, sixty-four great grandchildren, eight great, great grandchildren and one great, great, great grandchild.
