For the purpose of this memorial, the DOB year is 1811 based on information that she was aged about 65 years when she died, but obviously her exact DOB may vary by a year or two or so. The Fairfield Ledger obituary, as transcribed, stated that Elizabeth was the mother of eight children. That may understate the full number of children, leaving out mention of children who were deceased. Between the 1850 census and other sources for any children born after 1850 but deceased prior to 1860, the number of children may well number at least 10: To wit (not necessarily in chronological birth order) .... _ Johnston Moore _ William S. Moore _ Matilda "Josephine" Moore _ Martha Moore _Elmina Moore ----------------------- Fairfield Ledger August 17, 1876 Pg. 3 Col. 6 Sudden Death.- On Monday afternoon, August 14th, Mrs. Elizabeth Moore died on the cars between Fairfield and Glendale. Mrs. Moore left Red Oak, where she had been staying with her son, Capt. H. N. Moore (sic. Henry N. Moore), for the purpose of coming to Fairfield. She stopped off over Sunday at Ottumwa,and took the cars on the evening train in her apparent good health. When she arrived at Fairfield she did not get out, although friends were waiting for her. A little while after the cars started she discovered that she had passed Fairfield, and worried over it considerably. With the remark that she had rode on the cars a great many times and had never before passed the station, where she wanted to get off,, she fell down and immediately expired. A coroner's jury held an inquest and returned a verdict that she died of heart disease. Her remains were brought here and taken to the house of her son, Johnston Moore, from whence they was (sic. were) taken yesterday at 10 o'clock and interred in the Cemetery. Mrs. Moore was in the 65th year of her age. She was born in Pennsylvania. For many years she has been a worthy and consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. - With her husband and family she moved to Jefferson county in 1851, and her husband dying shortly afterward, she moved to town. - With a family of eight children she struggled bravely and reared them all, and they are yet living in this State, but scattered over various portions of it. Mrs. Moore was a woman of indomitable energy, a good neighbor, a kind and affectionate mother, and esteemed by all who knew her. Those of our citizens who knew her respected and loved her for her many sterling good qualities of head and heart, and will long mourn her loss. The children, eight in number, and a large concourse of friends followed her remains to their last resting place. ------------------------ Note: Burial records for Old Fairfield City Cemetery were often spotty at best. It is quite probable that Elizabeth was buried in the same plot as her husband Robert, and two of their children (Elmina and Samuel C.), but no headstone for her has been located. No way to know for sure if she had one and it was damaged and removed, or if she was not provided a headstone in the first place. Am placing this memorial in Lot 34 of Old Fairfield (City) Cemetery based on local genealogy burial listings, with a plot view photo, but with the caution that her burial is not proven as far as a headstone is concerned.
