Read More	Dayton Review Thursday, January 27, 1916 A Pioneer Mother Gone The sad news came last Saturday evening of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Welch, one of the pioneer mothers of this county, who passed away at the home of her son at Valley, Oklahoma. Elizabeth Wheeler was born in Ohio, January 19, 1831, and died January 22, 1916, aged 85 years, 3 days. She moved with her parents, Henry and Eliza (Link) Wheeler, to Illinois, settling near Bernadotte, where she was united in marriage to James Welch, May 20, 1847, who preceded her to the Land Beyond April 27, 1906. In 1856 she and her husband went to Grundy County, Missouri, thence in 1860 to Keokuk County, Iowa, where they lived ten years. The family came to this county in 1870, settling on the old farm in Burnside township north of Dayton, where they lived until her husband's death; since then she has made her home among her children, passing away at the home of her son, Alfred, where she had been the past two years in feeble health. She was the mother of eleven children, five of whom had passed before her. Five sons and a daughter, William and John at Connell, Washington, Marion of Dayton, Iowa, Theodore of Carpenter, S. Dak., Alfred of Valley, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Ella Manchester of Burnside township, together with twenty-two grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, a brother and two sisters, survive to mourn her death. Mrs. Welch gave her heart to her Savior in her young girlhood, uniting with the Church of Christ, of which she was a faithful and a consistent member nearly three score and ten years. She was a good neighbor, a loving mother, and an earnest Christian, and was always ready to help those around her in times of need. As one of the pioneers of the county, she lived to see its fruition, and loved to recall the happy days she had spent in the old Pleasant Point neighborhood, where she and her family had spent so many years. Her remains were brought to this place, her funeral being held yesterday afternoon from the home of her son, Marion, Rev. Moore conducting the services, and her remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in Dayton cemetery. A host of lifelong friends revere her memory, and sympathize with the family in their sorrow.
