Read More	Dayton Review Thursday, May 3, 1906 WELCH Another of the early pioneers of this county passed away last Thursday night in the death of James Welch, aged 79 years, 7 months, 29 days. He was born in Fulton Co., Ill., August 27, 1826. His parents both died the same day, March 15, 1847, leaving him to battle life alone. On May 20th of that year, he was married to Elizabeth Wheeler, who survives him. Mr. Welch's father, Thomas Welch, was a pioneer preacher of the Church of Christ, and the son united with that church in September 1847, living faithful to his Master to the day of his death. In 1856, Mr. Welch moved his family to Grundy County, Missouri, coming to Iowa in the spring of 1861, settling in Keokuk County. In 1871, he came to this county and settled upon the farm on which he died in Burnside township, at that time a part of Sumner township. Eleven children were born to him and Mrs. Welch, four of whom have preceded him to the other world. Six sons and one daughter still live, together with the mourning wife, twenty grand children, to revere his memory. The funeral was held on Sunday from the Church of Christ at Lehigh, Rev. McCrae of Valley Junction conducting the services, and his remains were laid to rest in Dayton cemetery. Mr. Welch was a man of the highest integrity, respected by all who knew him, his life always just between man and man. Always a hard worker, he saw much of the early history of this region, and did his part well towards its development. As neighbor and friend he was ever ready to render assistance in time of need, and a host of pioneer friends will sympathize with his family in their sad hour. DEATH CAUSED BY OLD AGE COMPLICATIONS Lehigh, April 28. – (Special to the Chronicle) – James Welch, another of the old pioneers of this section has passed away. The death occurred at his home, south of town, Friday morning. He had been ill for some time past as a result of a general old-age breaking down. Mr. Welch was a farmer, and up to a few years ago had engaged actively in this work. Of late, however, he had given up work and lived alone in a residence near that of his daughter, Mrs. Richard Manchester. The funeral will occur in this city Sunday at the Christian church. Rev. McCrey, pastor of the Christian church at Valley Junction, will preach the funeral sermon.
