Although the Fairfield Ledger listed (on November 9, 1888, shown on this memorial) recent marriages, births, and deaths, the entry for a October 26th marriage between Oliver Schillerstrom and Miss Ella C. Larson was evidently a misreading of the marriage application. Because Ella was a minor (aged 17), her father L.M. Larson had to give parental consent to the marriage, which he did on October 27, 1888. Perhaps someone submitted the marriage information to the Fairfield Ledger under the mistaken impression that the marriage took place on the 26th, and so it was published as such in error. This contributor has looked at the full marriage record and it does give the marriage date as being October 31, 1888. The license was made official by Charles Sippel, Clerk District Court. Ella's Fairfield Ledger obituary inadvertently listed the marriage year as 1887, while the Jefferson County Republican obituary for Oliver stated that they were married in 1889. Sigh. ----------------- Ella died at Wesley in Kossuth county, Iowa. A previous but edited obituary transcription by another researcher failed to make that distinction, leading to the wrong conclusion that she died in Jefferson county, Iowa. The DOD location is now changed to Wesley, Kossuth county, Iowa. ----------------- The Fairfield Ledger Wednesday, August 24, 1898 Page 3, Column 8 OBITUARY Editors Ledger: - The unexpected death of Mrs. Oliver Schillerstrom at Wesley, the 18th, occasioned many heavy hearts, both at the home in Kossuth county and among relatives here. At Wesley, where her home had been for a year or more, a large concourse of people sadly followed the remains of their greatly esteemed friend to the railway station, where the heartbroken husband with his three motherless children, the eldest of whom is not yet seven, started on the way to lay the loved one beside the first-born child in the Union cemetery at Glendale. William R. Smith, a brotherinlaw (sic), met the sorrowful company at Farifield and took them to his home, where Mr. Schillerstrom's aged father resides, and nearby the mother of the deceased. Public services were held Sunday afternoon at the Parsonsville church, conducted by Rev. Tibbets of Ft. Madison, assisted by Rev. S. T. Horton of Lockridge. The Lockridge choir, led by Alexander Hopkirk, rendered the music. The pallbearers were George Unkrich, J. F. Farman, Charles Sodergren, Walter Rizor, Henry and Irving Horton. Mrs. Schillerstrom was born in Sweden in 1871, her maiden name being Ellen C. Larson (sic. the first name may well have been Ellen, but only "Ella" is used on the headstone inscription). She was married to Oliver Schillerstrom in 1887 (sic. actually October 31, 1888), and was a member of the Lockridge Free Baptist church. So great was the concourse of people from Lockridge and adjoining neighborhoods, a number from Fairfield, that services were held in the grove. The father of the deceased was killed in a runaway accident several years since. The sympathy of our people could not but be heartfelt for the husband and three little children deprived of a mother's care and love.
