The Rev. Vance Wonser officiated. Mrs. Covich was born July 6, 1917, in Manhattan, Mont., to John and Hattie (Freswick) Hyink. When the flu epidemic of 1918 left her orphaned, she was adopted by her paternal grandparents, Bernard and Dena Hyink. The Rev. Vance Wonser officiated. Mrs. Covich was born July 6, 1917, in Manhattan, Mont., to John and Hattie (Freswick) Hyink. When the flu epidemic of 1918 left her orphaned, she was adopted by her paternal grandparents, Bernard and Dena Hyink. The family moved from Montana to Holland, Mich., where she completed high school. After graduating from St. Paul Bible College in 1940, she married fellow student Walter J. Covich, and they embarked on a lifetime of ministry in Alaska as missionaries with Slavic Gospel Association. After spending several months in Juneau, they settled in Port Graham, where they built a home and began a church. They continued serving the Lord in Southcentral Alaska in Chignik, Kenai, at Lazy Mountain Children's Home in Palmer, and in Cold Bay, finally settling in Anchorage in 1973. They retired to Kenai in 2001. Mrs. Covich enjoyed many activities, including the live music radio program she and her husband performed in Juneau in the '40s and teaching in the one-room school in Chignik in 1946, at Kenai Bible Church from 1948 to 1955 and at Lazy Mountain Children's Home from 1955 to 1972. After a year of ministry in Cold Bay, they settled in Anchorage, where she was active in the Alaska Native Service hospital auxiliary, in numerous music ministries, and in extending hospitality to all. Their home was "home away from home" to friends from outlying towns and visitors from Russia. Her family wrote: "Her family and her Lord were the center of her life, and her grandchildren held a special place in her heart." Mrs. Covich was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son, Robert "Robbie"; daughter, Yvonne Kay; and siblings, Lester, Esther, Minnie, Nettie, Henry, and Joe Bill. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Covich; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Jim Anderson; grandchildren, Sara, John and Laura Covich and Paula Sundwall; great-grandsons ,Tanner and Cole Sundwall; sister, Ruth Droppers; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Katherine Hyink. Memorial donations can be made to: Slavic Gospel Association, 6151 Commonwealth Drive, Love's Park, IL 61111. Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
