Mrs. Miller died Monday, Sept. 28, 1992, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. She was born Oct. 30, 1905, on a farm in Richardson County, Neb., to Frederick and Louise (Wist) Hartman. She attended public schools in Welch, Okla., and in Lawrence after moving here in 1919. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1928 from Kansas University and taught school at Ransom High School in Ransom before she was married. She married Carol E. Miller in June 1930 in Lawrence. The Millers built their restaurant, Miller's Bar-B-Q, that year at the bend in U.S. Highways 24-40 northeast of Lawrence. In a 1973 interview before their retirement, Mrs. Miller said she and her husband worked side-by-side for 43 years, serving "good food and homemade pies" to Lawrence residents and travelers alike. Mrs. Miller was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in its Trinity Service Class, Women E.L.C.A. and the Progressive Circle. She also belonged to the Kansas University Alumni Association, the Kansas University Gold Medal Club and the Oak Ridge Birthday Club, all in Lawrence. Her husband died April 5, 1978. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ella King, Great Bend; two sisters, Goldie Miner, Lincoln, Neb., and Wilma Hammond, Oklahoma City; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
