Petersen was born on May 28, 1925, in Wyoming, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Catharine (Brodersen) Petersen. He began his education in the country schools near Wyoming, then on to graduate at Wyoming High School in 1942. After graduation, he farmed with his father and brother and showed draft horses with his brother, Fred until 1959. He married Betty Peck on February 11, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He farmed all of his life and sold Pioneer Seed Corn, for 24 years. He was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church, the Jones County Farm Bureau, where he served on the board, Jets Committee, Wyoming Housing, Wyoming Fair Board and Lutheran Brotherhood. Elmer was recognized as outstanding young farmer in 1952. He went to the care center in February 2004 with Alzheimer's disease. He will be dearly missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Betty; 3 daughters, Judy Yockey of Holstein, Iowa, Jane (Konrad) Kail of Phoenix, Arizona, and Nancy (Scott) Collins of Wyoming, Iowa, one son, Thomas (Lynda) Petersen of Arlington, Texas; 2 grandchildren, Gerald "Chris" (Amy) Yockey of Holstein, Iowa and Adam Collins of Wyoming, Iowa; 4 step-grandchildren, Ranae (Larry) Yockey-Orrico of Chicago, Illinois, Rhonda (Scott) Anderson of Bellevue, Iowa, Jessica (Matt) Brost of Mansfield, Texas, Blake Hopkins of Arlington, Texas; 2 great-grandchildren, Nathan and Hannah Yockey of Holstein, Iowa; 5 step-great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Matthew, Lucas and Marcus Anderson of Bellevue, Iowa and Chaz Orrico of Chicago, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Virginia Petersen of Anamosa, and 2 brothers-in-law, Melvin Klein of Stanwood and Don (Carol) Peck of Ft. Collins, Colorado. Judy's husband, Gary died on Friday, December 2, 2005, in Anamosa, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Agnes, a brother, Fred, and a grandson, Terry Yockey. Elmer P. "Tug" Petersen of Wyoming, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa, at the age of 80 years.
