Petersen of Wyoming died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at the Anamosa Community Hospital at Anamosa, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on Dec. 10, 1922 near Wyoming, the son of Frederick and Catherine Brodersen Petersen. He began his education in the country schools near Wyoming and then attended Wyoming High School, graduating in 1940. After graduation, he farmed with his father. In 1943, Petersen entered the United States Army Air Corps and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII. Following his discharge from the Air Corps in 1945, he returned to farm with his father, southeast of Wyoming. It was during this time that he began playing baseball on the Wyoming "town team" and showing horses with is brother "Tug", which they did together until 1959. On August 1, 1948, he married Virginia Macomber at the Olin United Methodist Church in Olin. The couple moved to the family farm where they farmed until retiring in Wyoming in 1987. He was named Farm Bureau's "Jones County Outstanding Young Farmer", in 1957. Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Wyoming; two sons, James of anchorage, Alaska, and Guy (Laurie) of Wyoming, a daughter, Sue (Dan) Choate of anchorage, Alaska; two grandchildren, Andy and Jenny Petersen; a brother, Elmer "Tug" (Betty) Petersen of Wyoming; a sister, Agnes (Mel) Klein of Stanwood; a foreign exchange son, Pete Jaatinen; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter Kathy in 1984. Hayden Funeral Home, Wyoming was in charge of the arrangements.
