I located her grave on the FindAGrave website and had a correct date of death. According to Nuggets to Neutrinos by Steven T. Mitchell, pages 285-86, there were two accidents in September of 1890. Engine #4 was for the Black Hills and Fort Pierre Railroads. Track through Elk Canyon to Piedmont was completed in August of 1890. The excursion train went through Elk Creek Canyon. Her daughter Leota was with her (family history) but survived. Emarilla was a twin to her sister Mary Ann "Betsy" (Dory) Bartow. Her husband later married her sister Wealthy. Black Hills Daily Times newspaper (Deadwood), September 14, 1890 - "GREAT DISASTER. The Masonic Excursion Terminates in Death and Injury. A Rotten Tree Falls Upon a Crowded Car. Killing Two and Maiming Eight Passengers. One of the greatest catastrophes it has ever been the duty of the Times to chronicle, occurred on the Black Hills and Fort Pierre railroad, a short distance south of Elk Creek station, at noon, yesterday. At 9 a.m. a special consisting of an engine with Dell Faulkner at the throttle; a baggage car, day coach, observation car and five flat cars, departed from Lead for a run to Piedmont, thence return to Crystal Cave for a picnic and an afternoon of pleasure. The cars were occupied by members of the Masonic fraternity, their families and friends, to the number of two hundred and ten all told...The day was bright and beautiful and as the train load of pleasure seekers moved out of Lead, down and up the heavy grades; in and out deep cuts; over towering trestles; around curves of sharpest degree or along the crest of majestic hills to which a panorama of exquisite beauty unfolded, a pleasure, joy and satisfaction was universally experienced, far removed from even thought of danger and disaster... A mile south of Elk Creek station the road leads in straight line for a half mile or so before plunging into the picturesque canyon...Immediately along the track the timber has been removed, and company employees are engaged with ax and torch destroying the debris, hence it was that although all eyes beheld a distant blazing tree no significance attached as the heavily loaded train at moderate speed drew nearer and nearer. At last the branchless, greatly decayed spar was reached, and as the train moved by, creating a powerful suction, the trunk swayed and fell, striking the rear, its upper extremity reaching the opposite rear corner of the car. It was a very rotten piece of timber, and as it struck, the protruding ends broke off, leaving a great log upon the car. The fall, the crash, the scream, the disaster, occupied less time than necessary in a relation, and were heard and seen by all on board. In an instant the train was at a standstill amid a scene of indescribable excitement and confusion. The flat cars were provided with three rows of seats running longitudinally, one at either side and one through the center. All were occupied. On the left side, at the point where the tree struck, sat Mrs. J.K. Snyder, wife of an employee of the Star hoist who, as well as Jno. Belding, engineer at the Golden Star mill, who occupied a center seat, a little to her right, had her back to the burning tree, consequently they were stricken without the slightest premonition. Mr. Belding was instantly killed, his neck being broken and other injuries inflicted. Mrs. Snyder was fatally injured in the head and body, and although death did not result for an hour or more, happily she was unconscious and suffered no pain. Dr. Freeman, one of the party assisted by many passengers, notably Judge John H. Burns, rendered valuable service both in alleviating the pains of the injured and in tranquilizing those who escaped. A list of the dead, dying and injured was completed as follows: Killed - Judd Belding Fatally Injured - Mrs. J.K. Snyder - died an hour later Injured: Sam Jilbert, seriously internally. Mrs. John Brook, less badly bruised Daughter of Mrs. J.K. Snyder, 4 years old, both legs broken. Andrew Bray, legs fractured Son of Andrew Bray, leg below the knee, painfully ____Larry, leg, slightly Jack Lillig, slightly on head. George Beemer, thumb broken. Internal injuries feared. The dead and dying were placed in the baggage car, as comfortably as possible; the remnant of the fallen tree was thrown from the cars, and, with its load of appalled passengers, the train moved back to Elk Creek, turned on the Y, and awaited the south bound express. At this point Mrs. Snyder breathed her last... Mrs. Snyder was the wife of an employee of the Homestake. Mr. Snyder went east a few days ago to place a son at school. He was due home, yesterday, and Mrs. Snyder had wired him to leave the Elkhorn train at Piedmont and there await her arrival. He, doubtless, complied and while anticipating a speedy happy greeting, received the crushing intelligence that his loved one was no more. In addition to the son at school, she leaves a terribly crippled daughter and, we understand, a babe.
