Feb. 1923 Russell Dory received word Monday of the sudden death of his sister, Mrs. Mary A. Bartow, of Des Moines, at the home of her son, Clyde near Norwalk eight miles south of Des Moines at 11:30 Sunday evening. Mrs. Bartow was sick only an hour. Her health had not been good for several years, and about a year ago, she was struck by an automobile and received serious injuries, but it was not realized that she was in a dangerous condition. Mrs. Bartow was born at Spring Valley, Wisconsin, May 18, 1853, and was nearly 70 years old at the time of her death. She was one of a family of eleven children, five boys and six girls, and seven of them, four boys and three girls, are still living. When a girl she moved with her parents to northeastern Iowa. The family later moved to Adair County where she lived until her marriage to Joseph S. Bartow in 1871. To this union two children were born, Wealthy Ella Bartow, who died at the age of 16, and William Clyde Bartow. The brothers and sister who survive here are: J. F. Dory and Russell Dory, of Fontanelle; E. W. Dory, or Prescott; George E. Dory, of Bridgewater; Mrs. Jane Snively, of Boulder, Colorado; Mrs. Viola Miller of Fontanelle; Mrs. Wealthy Snider, of Prosser, Washington. Mrs. Bartow is well known to many of the older residents of Fontanelle and during her residence in Des Moines has made regular visits here every summer and kept closely in touch with people here. She was an excellent woman whose life was a blessing to all whom she came in contact with. The body was brought to Fontanelle yesterday afternoon. Funeral services were held in the Congregationist Church at 4:00 and were conducted by Rev. Owen Thomas. Internment was made in the Fontanelle Cemetery. In her father's will, he spells her name Marian.
