Mrs. Emeline Garland came here with her parents when Nebraska was mostly unbroken prairie land. Her parents, with their family homesteaded a tract of land northwest of Ohiowa in 1876. Mrs. Garland's life was one of toil and sacrifice. She was content with her lot in always doing what her hands could find to do. Pleasure was of little consideration for her tasks were not alone in the home, but in the fields as well. Always a great lover of the outdoors, her happiness came through perserverance in overcoming hardships, and she was thankful for the strength granted her, for as a mother of a large family, there was always much to do. She continued doing little household tasks until the last few weeks of her life. Although she was in poor health for a long while, she never complained but patiently bore her afflictions, not fearing death saying, "she was ready to die." She alwyas had a friendly greeting and smile for everyone. Maggie, John and Will Garland and Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Garland and family were at her bedside at the time of her death at 2:20 in the morning. The two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Churchill, Mrs. Jess Walters and Mr. Walters were summoned from Geneva, but did not reach the home before their mothers passing. She passed away at her home July 10, 1946, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 17 days. She was born December 23, 1862, the second child of Samuel and Katherine Garland. Her birthplace was at Marshall County, Illinois. At the age of fourteen, she moved with her parents to a farm in Fillmore County. September 14, 1886, she was united in marriage to Joseph Garland. To this union twelve children were born, seven sons and five daughters, five of whom preceded her in death, Joseph, Dewey, Gertrude, Pearl and Elijah. Also preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, two sisters, Mrs. Ida Keith and Mrs. Matilda Malcolm, one brother, Samuel Garland and a grandson, Harold Walters. The earlier part of her life was spent on a farm. In 1920 she and her husband retired to make their home in Ohiowa, where she spent the remainder of her life. Mrs. Garland was a person who always had a friendly smile, her efforts to make others happy was an outstanding characteristic of her life. She was a kind and loving wife and mother and a good friend and neighbor. Mrs. Garland is survived by four sons, Lewis H., John H. and Guy W. all of Ohiowa, and Charles whose residence is unknown; four daughters, Maggie of Ohiowa, Mrs. Laura Walters and Mrs. Lizzie Churchill of Geneva; Mrs. Hannah Skoglund of San Dimas, Cal.; eleven grandchildren, Lewis, Velma and Arnold Garland, Mrs. Dorothy Griess, Melvin Churchill, Lee Garland, Wallace, Frances, Max, Enos and Donald Garland, and eleven great-grandchildren, also a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held from her home at Ohiowa, July 12, with the Methodist pastor, Rev. M. O. McCamley officiating. His text was "it is Finished." Rev. Mr. McCamley sang "Rock of Ages," the deceased's favorite song. "Near to the Heart of God" was rendered by Mrs. Lindell Churchill and Mrs. J. C. Theobald, their accompanist on the organ being Mrs. L. L. Goodman, who also played an instrumental selection as friends passed the bier. Floral arrangement were in charge of Miss Alice Arneke and Mrs. Henry Folkerts, there being a deluge of blossoms that blanked the grave. Casket bearers were E. D. and Arthur Drummond, Fred Wolter, Henry Folkerts, W. A. Matties, and James Hennessey. burial was in the Ohiowa cemetery.
