He was born April 5, 1855, the second child of John and Amanda Garland. His birthplace was in Marsell County, Illinois; where he remained until the age of twenty-one. From Illinois he went to Grafton, Ogallala and other places in Nebraska, until he settled on a farm northwest of Ohiowa. In the fall of 1919 he located in Ohiowa, where he lived until his death. September 14, 1886, he was united in marriage to Emeline Garland. To this union twelve children were born, six sons and six daughters. Five children preceded him in death, Joseph, Dewey, Gertrude, Pearl and Elijah. Mr. Garland is survived by his wife, Emeline and four daughters, Maggie of Ohiowa, Mrs. Jess Walters of Geneva, Mrs. Lizzie Churchill of Geneva, Mrs. Walter Skoglund of LaVerne, Cal., three sons, Lewis H., John H. and Guy W. of Ohiowa; two brothers, Charles and Samuel of Peoria, Ill., and two sisters, Sarah Carlie of Davenport, Ill., and Hannah Harris of Cimmarron, Kas. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death, John and William of Peoria, Ill., Elijah of Porterville, Cal., and Lizzie Harris of Hedruck, Ia. There are also twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and many friends left to mourn. Relatives and friends attended the funeral services for one of our pioneers Tuesday afternoon, October 13, at the Joe Garland home. Mr. Garland's health for several months had been failing. There were days in which he endured much, the last three weeks he waited for the last hour to come. His trials were patiently borne. He was a kind and loving father, and a good friend and neighbor. The funeral occurred at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. A. W. Ahrendts, pastor of the Methodist Church, whose text was "Thous hast the words of eternal life." St. John 6:68. The songs, "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Abide with Me," was sung by Billie Upton. One verse of "God be with You Till We Meet Again" was sung at the cemetery. The floral arrangements wee in the hands of Alice and Mable Arneke. Casket bearers were E. R. Lindgren, E. D. Drummond, P. J. Pekar, W. F. Domeier, Norman Wright and Fred Saatmann Sr. Burial was at the Ohiowa Cemetery.
