Description	:	Special note: The 1880 U.S. Census for the parents of "Emery James" used "Emory" for the first name, and the obituary for his wife referred to her as "Mrs. Emory James". His own obituary and headstone inscription, however, used "Emery". The obituary of his mother referred to him as "Emry". Update a/o May 27, 2013: per SAC note, the "Emory" used in the census and obituary for his wife was in error. Whether a clerical mistake or otherwise isn't known. Will use "Emery James" for this memorial, without using "Emory" as a nickname. ------------- Fairfield Daily Journal March 31, 1909 Pg. 3 Col. 2 ENGINE KILLS EMERY JAMES Young Man Well Known Here Run Down in Washington Freight Yards Emery James, a Rock Island brakeman, formerly of this city met a horrible death at Washington this morning. He was run down by a switch engine at 6:25 and instantly killed. James, who resides at Eldon was with this crew at the Washington freight yards this morning and had just signeled (sic.) for the switch engine to back up when he caught his foot in a crossing frog (sic.) and was unable to extricate it before the engine struck him. His body was ground to pieces under the wheels. (Note: this transcriber debated whether to omit the last sentence, but left it in since it was part of the obituary. The intent is not to cause grief for any living descendants and will be altered if requested). Mr. James was the son of Mrs. Marcia James who resides on east Briggs street and was born and raised in Fairfield. He leaves a wife and four children. Mrs. James was Miss Gertrude Rasmus of this city. Three brothers Charles, Joseph and William also survive. Charles James goes to Washington this evening to take charge of the remains. --------- Four children (note: due to the deaths of their parents, both in 1909, the children eventually were raised by other family members. Information about this James family and of these children was found in a search on Ancestry.com, which has at least one family tree with substantial material on this family that is credible): * Carl Newton James * Fred Hans James ( Fred H James ) * Alta Fay James (b. about 1902. What happened to her ??) * Dora/Doris May James (Born April 6, 1908. Married first to Earl Lee Burnett. Married second to Bernard Leroy Morey; died as Doris Morey on April 5, 1993 in California. Burial location not known to this contributor at this time. Any clarification would be appreciated.)
