Eggert, who succumbed Sunday evening very suddenly, altho he had been poorly for the past week and had been confined to his bed a part of the time. Mr. Eggert had been down town on Sunday evening, and was accompanied home by his granddaughter, Mrs. Nadine Carlson who assisted him to his room. Mr. Eggert in a few words bid farewell to his granddaughter and passed away peacefully and suddenly as he lay down on his bed. His daughter, Mrs Mabel Stenner of Kansas City, arrive with -in an hour after his passing. Mr. Eggert will be greatly missed, not only by the family but by the townspeople as well, with whom he chatted every day. He had a pleasing manner and youthful, cheery spirit which won for him many friends among all ages. He was energetic despite failing health which had been evident for the past few months, and his strong will to go on, evidenced the sturdy pioneer that he was. The Eggert family of brothers and sisters constituted one of the early groups of Hamilton county. All have lived to advanced age, and but a few years ago the family circle was unbroken by death. Those remaining have happy memories of annual reunions. Final rites were conducted from the Chapman-Higby chapel at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, with Rev. David Tudor of the Federated church in charge. Rev. Tudor spoke from the 23rd Psalm. W. H. Menzie, accompanied by Mrs. Glen Chapman at the organ, sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Lead Me Gently Home, Father". Many old friends and neighbors gathered to pay a final tribute to their friend, and the floral tribute was beautiful and abundant. Emil Justice Eggert was born to Henry and Henrietta Eggert in Princeton, Ill., Nov. 8, 1856, and was one of seven children, four of whom preceded him in death: Marie, Lena, Henry and Henrietta. Two brothers survive, August and Charles of Aurora. He came west to Nebraska in 1879 and settled on a farm southwest of Aurora. On Nov. 9, 1882, he was united in marriage to Nellie McCarthy, who passed away Oct. 7, 1913. Three children were born to this union; Mrs. Mabel Eggert-Stenner and Mrs. Effie Eggert-Powers fo Kansas City, and Frank Eggert of Pomona, Calif. Grandchildren surviving are E. J., C.S., J.T., PFC W. T. Stenner (somewhere in England), Agatha Eggert-Haas of Memphis, Tenn., Nadine Eggert-Carlson of Aurora, and Sgt. E. Emil Eggert, stationed at Fort Jackson. S. C. Five great grandchildren who survive: Sandra Jane and Jean Carlson, Barbara Stenner (who was born on her grandfather's 83rd birthday), and Madeline and Truman Stenner. He passed away suddenly Sunday evening, August 22, at this home following a short illness, at the age of 86 years 9 months and 14 days. When Mr. Eggert came to this country in April, 1879, he brought with him a team and a breaking plow, coming to Grand Island with a cousin, in a box car. Loading some household goods and lumber he came eastward to this county. When he first began breaking the prairie. He purchased his first land in 1883 and continued to farm until 1914 when he moved to Aurora where he since made his home. He was an officer in the Hamilton County Fair Assn. for many years as president for five years. Mr. Eggert experienced the many hardships and the joys that made up the life of Nebraska's pioneers. Pallbearers were Frank Johnson, Lewis Cruff, Lester Caukins, Dave Reardon, Roy DeMaranfille and Fred Gingrich. Among those from a distance who came to attend the services were all of his immediate family, the son from Pomona, and the two daughters of Kansas City, the grandson, Sgt. Emil Eggert of Fort Jackson, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Eggert and Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Eggert, and daughter of Kansas City, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Eggert of York, and Mr. and Mrs. Leo Eggert and Mrs. Roberta Snider of Hastings. Committal was in the Aurora cemetery.
