HANCE LAWSON DEAD Was Widow Of The Late Hance Lawson, One Of The Pioneer Business Men Of Somerset. Widely Known For Her Religious And Charitable Work. Mrs. Emeline Lawson, widow of the late Hance Lawson, who was one of the founders and pioneer business men of the city of Crisfield, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie Milligan, on west Main street, this city, Friday, January 3rd, of chronic pneumonia. While she had been sick for some time, it was not until about a week before her death that her condition grew serious, and from then until Friday she continued to grow worse, despite every effort made to check the course of her disease. Mrs. Lawson was a member of a long-lived family, and reached the advanced age of eighty-four in full possession of all her faculties, when death claimed her. She was born in what is now Asbury district, in the neighborhood of Jenkins Creek, and was the daughter of Elijah Sterling, who was 75 when he died, and Mary T. Sterling, who lived one year longer, and was 76 when death claimed her. Mrs. Lawson had been suffering from progressive paralysis for about six years, the greater part of which time she was confined to her bed. Yet throughout all her years of suffering she maintained the sweet and gentle disposition that had gained for her so many friends during her younger days, and with calm resignation and the beautiful certainty of the joys of a better world looming up brightly before her failing eyes, quietly and peacefully passed away. She was a faithful and devoted member of Immanuel M. E. church, this city, and before she was stricken with paralysis, devoted a large portion of her time to church work, and to helping the poor and needy, not alone in this city, but in the outlying districts, as well. She was the author of many deeds of kindness that have made better men and better women of those with whom she came in contact, and many homes were made brighter, and kept brighter, by her visitations. Possibly no person in lower Somerset county had a larger number of friends than did Mrs. Lawson. Up to within a few days of her death, there was never a day but that some friends, young and old, well-to-do, and the lowly in life, stopped for a few moments to pay their respects to Mrs. Lawson, and each and every one was received with the same sweet smile, and the same old-fashioned courtesy that characterized the whole trend of her long and useful life. Funeral services were conducted at Immanuel M. E. church Monday afternoon, at two o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. E Habbart. Her earthly remains were then laid to rest in Asbury cemetery, near the last resting places of those of her beloved who have preceded her to the great beyond. The casket was banked with beautiful floral offerings, the gifts of friends and acquaintances from far and near. Mrs. Lawson is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Annie Milligan, with whom she made her home for many years and at whose residence she died, and Mrs. Elizabeth Roach, of this city, three grandchildren and one great-grand child, one brother, Capt. John Sterling, president of the Bank of Crisfield, and for many years identified with the business interests of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Elijah Nelson, and Mrs. Wm.
