Description	:	My mother, Emma Pavlicek Podhajsky, came to this country when she .was only seven years old. She traveled with her Aunt Anna and they settled somewhere around Vining. She had 5 sisters and 3 brothers and they all came to this country a few at a time, or as they could afford it. Usually, the whole family couldn t afford to come at one time, so the father would come first, and the mother and children would stay in the old country, then maybe just the mother and small children could come then the bigger ones. Then the big... Read More	My mother, Emma Pavlicek Podhajsky, came to this country when she .was only seven years old. She traveled with her Aunt Anna and they settled somewhere around Vining. She had 5 sisters and 3 brothers and they all came to this country a few at a time, or as they could afford it. Usually, the whole family couldn t afford to come at one time, so the father would come first, and the mother and children would stay in the old country, then maybe just the mother and small children could come then the bigger ones. Then the big kids would have to come alone, and they didn't know the English language, so some one would pin a tag on their coat, or put a chain around their neck, telling where this person was supposed to go and they'd put him on the boat and away he'd go. Sometimes they'd be on the boat about 3 weeks. They got along all right. They would usually dump them off the train in Tama, just so someone was there to pick them up or meet them you know. One family I knew lost their six year old daughter on the trip over in the boat. She got sick, pneumonia I think, and they had to bury her at sea. I went to country school and finished 8th grade. I wanted to go on to school and become a secretary, but my parents wanted me to stay home and work. My mother and dad would go out to the field and I did all the cooking. When I was 10 or 11, I could do all the cooking and mix up dough and bake bread. Another job I had after school was to carry in the wood and then pump water for our cows.
