Her father was known/recorded as/by at least three versions of a surname: Simons, Samons, and Sammons. About the best that can be said for unity is that his first name was "William". A relationship link to his memorial (as William Samons) is being made per edit request on February 14, 2015. Will use "Samons" for the maiden name of Emma on this memorial, to be consistent with the headstone inscription of her father, but with the caution that other family researchers and sources have used other versions. Short of not putting in any entry for a maiden name on this memorial, some researchers may overlook this memorial if searching only by their interpretation of what the maiden name should be. Not an easy solution to this problem, unfortunately. According to Emma's 1893 Jefferson county marriage record to Larn F. Nickels her parents were listed as William Simons and Emily Williamson Simons. Where her mother is buried has not been established at this time. Per this December 6, 1893 marriage record, this was the second marriage for Larn F. Nickels. Emma was recorded as "Emma Curtis", aged 28, and so this was her second marriage as well. The full name of her first husband was not provided - he was Reuben G. Curtis and they were married on April 18, 1887. A search was made in several contemporary Fairfield area newspapers on microfilm but no 1893 wedding story appears to have been published (cannot rule out that it was overlooked, however, just not found as an otherwise obvious marriage item). It may be that because these were second marriages for Larn and Emma that no marriage story was deemed appropriate for publication. Emma's Jefferson county death record listed her age at death as 35y 1m 22. --------------- The following is a verbatim transcription of Emma's obituary. The Fairfield Ledger sometimes spelled names incorrectly, so the use of "Nichles" for the married name should be taken with a grain of salt. Fairfield Ledger Wednesday September 25, 1901 Pg. 3 Col. 2 SUNDAY afternoon at her home in the southwest part of the city occurred the death of Mrs. Emma Nichles (sic), after an illness of several months. Mrs. Nichles (sic) was in the thirty-sixth year of her age and is survived by her husband and an adopted child (sic. the name of this adopted child not named. She was a niece of Emma's: Hazel May Burrows Wirt). The funeral was held from the home Tuesday afternoon and interment was made in the Evergreen cemetery.
