Any clarification would be appreciated. ----------------- Married to Leland Russell Holgate on January 31, 1917. ----------------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Friday Nov. 29, 1935 Pg. 1 Col. 8 HOLGATE RITES ARE HELD HERE Burial This Afternoon; Funeral At Methodist Church Funeral services for Mrs. Leland Holgate were held at 2:30 p.m. today from the First Methodist church of Fairfield, in charge of Dr. U. S. Smith. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers at the funeral today were: E. P. Bailey, Charles W. Ireland; Wade Flinspach, Orval Gantz, Elmer Ramsay and Stanley Workman. Mrs. Holgate died Wednesday at 3:30 in a Burlington hospital, after nearly a months illness with lympathic leukemia, a rare disease. Mrs. Holgate was born in Henry county, near Rome (sic. not necessarily in Rome, however), 41 years ago. She attended business college in Lincoln, Neb. and took nurse training at Rochester, Minn. She was married to Leland Holgate of Fairfield on January 31, 1917. She and her husband formerly operated a tea room in Fairfield, and for the past two years, she had been hostess in the Burlington Hotel dining room. She is survived by her husband; her father G. S. Grinstead of Fairfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Carl Danielson of Fairfield and Mrs. Irma Unkrich of Glasgow, Mont. ---------------------- Fairfield Ia. Daily Ledger Thursday Dec. 5, 1935 Pg. 5 Col. 4 OBITUARY MRS. LELAND HOLGATE Enola Bell eldest of the three daughters of G. S. and Effie Bell Grinstead, was born on Dec. 29, 1893 (sic. although the headstone has the year 1894, the 1893 date is likely more correct), near Rome in Henry county, Iowa. She passed away in the Burlington, Iowa hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1935. Her early education was secured in the rural schools of Henry county and at Whittier Academy in Salem, Ia. Later she spent two years in nurses training at the State Hospital, Rochester, Minn., and following that attended Business College in Lincoln, Nebr. After two years spent in the business life of Lincoln she came to Fairfield in 1915 and became a bookkeeper in the First National Bank. On Jan. 31, 1917 she was happily married to Leland R. Holgate who survives here (sic. her ??). After 12 years spent on the farm Mr. and Mrs. Holgate moved into Fairfield. For the past two years the home has been in Burlington. When 16 years of age Mrs. Holgate united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Highland Chapel in Henry county. On removing to Fairfield she transferred to the local congregation and since January 1, 1918, her membership has been here. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron in the year 1931 and as District Instructor for the Grand Chapter in 1932. Mrs. Alta Sullivan, a Past Worthy Grand Matron, assisted by Grand Chapter representatives read the O.E.S. service at the church. Mrs. Holgate is survived by her sorrowing husband, Leland Holgate, her father G. S. Grinstead, two sisters Mrs. Borea Danielson of Fairfield and Mrs. Irma Unkrich of Glasgow, Mont. Besides these a wide circle of relatives and friends will mourn her untimely passing. The gracious personality, kindly ways and unfailing friendliness of Mrs. Holgate won for her many friends and her presence will be greatly missed. Funeral services were held from the Fairfield M. E. church on Friday, conducted by Dr. U. S. Smith, the minister. Mrs. Alma Linder presided at the organ. Stricken with an illness a month ago her disease proved to be incurable. Everything that medical skill and loving care could do proved unavailing. The last two weeks were spent in the Burlington hospital where she passed quietly away. The remains were interred in Evergreen cemetery.
