Born in Sweden in 1876, Mr Dahlin came to Minnesota at the age of four and was brought up there. In 1903 he came to Claresholm with his mother and bought a half-section from the Hudson's Bay Co at $6 per acre. The land was sold Tuesday at $50.00 an acre after being farmed for 54 years. Mr Dahlin recalls that is was not common to find wild cattle roaming around the fields - creatures which usually ran off after sighting a human. One day, however, when he was in the pasture far from shelter and fences, he came upon such a herd. All of the animals ran away, save for one large ferocious bull, The animal refused to run and started pawing with his front feet in preparation to charge. Erick knew that if he began to run the bull would attack him, so he removed his coat and started yelling and waving the garment, which succeeded in frightening the bull away. In May 1904 Mr Dahlin made the first track from his farm across the prairie to Stavely. The following day seven Indian democrat wagons were seen coming toward his house. He said he was quite frightened, for he had heard stories of what Indians had done to whites. " A big old Indian jumped out of a wagon and came up to me and I didn't know if he was going to kill us." Erick recalls " then the rest of the men followed the first, while he proceeded to make signs that he wanted firewood." He gave them all he had and was glad to be rid of them. On another occasion one of his horses got loose from its stake and scattered all his sacks of seed oats which he had brought all the way from North Dakota for his first crop. Once while bringing four horses, two milk cows and some calves by train from Minnesota, part of the track was found to be washed out and four weeks were spent at a siding. There was no way of getting the animals out of the box car, so Erick had to feed them in the car for two weeks. Mr Dahlin plans to live in Stettler with his daughter for a time, but has not made up his mind where he will settle permanently.
