Carlson, a well-known farmer and pioneer, northwest of here in Union county, S.D., who succumbed to pneumonia on Monday, February 19, 1923, after a brief illness, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 1 day. Eric Oskar Carlson was born in Hattorp, Lyreslad, Socken, Skaraborgs Lan, Sweden, May 18, 1847, where he spent his boyhood with his father on the little farm. There being several boys in the family, of whom Oskar was the youngest, the small farm barely supporting the family, he decided to seek his fortune in America, which was pictured to him as the land of great promise. At the age of twenty two years he, with some of his companions, emigrated to this country and arrived at Missouri Valley, Iowa, May 18, 1869. There he secured employment on the gravel train then operating, leveling the track between Missouri Valley and Sioux City. Having heard that homestead land could be procured in South Dakota – 160 acres for $14.00 – he made the journey on foot from Sioux City and filed on a claim, made some Improvements and returned to his work on the railroad, where he remained for over two years. He then decided to move on to his farm in Sioux Valley township, Union county, S.D., twelve miles northwest of Akron, the journey being made from Sioux City by ox team. Mr. Carlson was thus one of the real, earliest pioneers in that locality, with not a neighbor in sight—nothing but the bare hills and valleys and not, a tree to be seen anywhere. The nearest town where provisions could be procured was Elk Point, a small village twenty five miles away, and the only way of transportation was with ox team or on foot. His first house was an underground dug-out, where he lived for a number of years, until he could break up the prairie and raise crops, and by hard work and saving he was in a few years enabled to build a modern dwelling house, which now stands as a monument to his memory. Mr. Carlson was a home-loving man, of sterling and upright character, honest and just in all his dealings. The welfare of his family was his first thought. His home was known far and wide for its hospitality. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and one son, Albln, and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Kapfer and Mrs. Michael Hultgren, all of Union county, S.D., and a host of friends. There was a large attendance at the funeral services conducted by Rev. E. Johnson in the Union Creek Lutheran church on Wednesday of last week. Interment was in the cemetery there.
