Some family researchers doing their family trees, especially on Ancestry, have inadvertently thought that the death record was for a death in Jefferson county, even to the level of Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa. For certain reasons deaths elsewhere are recorded in the county where the deceased lived, but in this case the assumption that Ernest died in Fairfield, Jefferson county, Iowa, is not correct. Son of Hervey Edgar Snook and Katie Davisson Snook. Caution: the middle initial is "B", but there are conflicting versions of what the middle name actually is. Found and scanned in the military records on Ancestry is a WWI draft registration card for Ernest that was written in cursive, appearing to show the middle name as "Brainerd". However, a image of his WWII registration card shows the typed information as spelling the middle name as "Brainard". It isn't known if Ernest was fully aware of these differences in spellings, so in the interest of clarity this memorial will be entered with just the middle initial "B", pending any further documentation either way. Ledger Thursday Sept. 21, 1961 Pg. 8 Ernest Snook Taken in Death PLEASANT PLAIN, Ia. - Ernest Snook, 69, well known resident of the Pleasant Plain community and a native of Jefferson county, passed away this morning about 8 a.m. at the University hospital in Iowa City where he was undergoing treatment for a heart ailment. The body is being returned to Fairfield where last rites are pending. Ernest Snook was born Oct. 8, 1890, in Penn township (sic. in Jefferson county, Iowa), the son of H. E. and Katie Davisson Snook. He spent his early life in that community. On Dec. 25, 1923, he was united in marriage to Anna Hawbaker who survives. They had made their home in Pleasant Plain for the past several years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Lee Snook, Dubuque, one grandson, and a sister, Mrs. John Reeder, 402 E. Hempstead, Fairfield. He was preceded in death by one son and one daughter, twins, who died in infancy; his parents and one sister.
