Described by Potter residents as the worst tragedy in the history of the town, Lohman was praised by relatives and friends for his composure and consideration of others after burning clothing had been torn from his person by Barnett Ball, whose business was located next door, and Albert Wagner, a customer who was in the Lohman store at the time of the blast. FILLING STOVE Lohman was filling a kerosene stove which had been turned out a short time before, when the can exploded, blowing the bottom out and showering his clothing with kerosene. In groping his way out of the cream station, separated from the store by a plywood partition, he became entangled in an electric fan on the floor in the doorway. After his rescue he smoked a cigarette while waiting the arrival of a doctor and an ambulance. He remained cheerful throughout the long delay while efforts were made to get telephone calls through. The Potter exchange was dismantled two months ago, and Potter subscribers are served by the Easton exchange. He was taken to a Leavenworth hospital, where two doctors gave further treatment and blood transfusions and on advice of the physicians was then rushed to the Kansas University Medical Center, where his death occurred a few hours later. BORN ON FARM Ernest Francis Lohman was born Feb. 6, 1920, on a farm southwest of Potter, a son of A.M. and Flora Lohman. He attended the Potter grade school and St. John's Lutheran school and was graduated from the Potter High school with the class of 1937. In 1938 he entered a Kansas City, Mo. business college and upon graduation was employed by the Townly Hardware Co. at Kansas City until his induction into the army Nov. 3, 1941. He served as a tech sergeant in the air corps overseas two years, two months and 22 days and was there when his father's death occurred July 16, 1945. He received his discharge Dec. 21, 1945. His marriage to Miss Betty Lou Shrout took place Aug. 17, 1946, who survives with a daughter, Linda Sue, nine months of age. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. August M. Lohman, Sr.; two sisters, Mrs. Howard Lewis and Mrs. Clifford Sellers, Kansas City, Mo.; four brothers, August Lohman, Jr., Potter; Harold and Lester Lohman, at home, and LeRoy Lohman, Walcott. Purchasing his Potter business Nov. 11, 1946, he enjoyed a good patronage and was doing well. He was a communicant of St. John's Lutheran church three miles south of Potter. He was proud of his infant daughter and often took her to the store with him after his evening meal, but went back without her the evening of the tragedy.
