Mrs. Schmelzer died at her home here at 5:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, Jan. 8 Ernistine Katherine Winch was born on a farm in Volga township on July 21, 1875, the daughter of Ernest and Philomena Pohlman Winch. She was baptized during infancy and was confirmed in the Ceres Lutheran church April 14, 1889. She was a member of St. Paul's church. Following her marriage in 1894 to Otto Schmelzer, she and her husband made their home on their farm south of Garnaillo until 1942 when they moved to Garnavillo. Mrs. Schmelzer is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Maibauer and Mrs. Katherine Rolfes of Garnavillo; Harry Schmelzer of Guttenberg and Otto Schmelzer of Littleport; three stepsons; one brother, Louis Winch of Littleport; four half-brothers, Ernest, Henry, William and Edward; three half-sisters, Mrs. Selma Thein, Mrs. Lena Wittman and Mrs. Melinda Feidt; eight grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, George and Fred Winch and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Meyer. +++ 1984 History of Clayton County, Iowa, Page 650 Otto and Katherine Winch Schmelzer Otto Schmelzer was born 15 Nov. 1862, at Garnavillo, Ia., a son of Johan and Catherine Grell Schmelzer. On 16 Aug. 1894, he married Ernestine Katherine Winch (b. 21 July 1875) a daughter of Ernest and Wilhelmina Pohlman Winch of Elkport, Ia. This was the third marriage for Otto. Information on the first two are at the end of this article. Otto and Katherine farmed south of Garnavillo, the present Eugene Schmelzer farm. Their family consisted of the three sons of Otto's first marriages, and their own four children: Elizabeth (Elta) m. #1 Fred Maibauer, d. 14 July, 1967, m. #2 Albert Warren, d. 30 Jan. 1984. She lives in Pinellas Park, Fla.; Katherine (m. George Rolfes) seperate article; Harold (Harry) m. Elizabeth (Betty) Brailer, they live i Guttenberg; and Otto Jr. m. Margaret (Maggie) Thein, they also live in Guttenberg. Otto d. 20 Dec. 1939, and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Garnavillo. Katherine d. 8 Jan. 1960, and is buried at the Garnavillo City Cemetery. Otto's first marriage was to Heneritta Berns, a daughter of Theodore Berns. It took place on 21 April 1885. They had one son Henry (m. Katherine Eglseder). Heneritta d. 3 June 1887. Otto married Anna Lueck on 22 Feb. 1889. They had two sons. Edward (m. Ruth Demo) and Albert (m. Alvina Felder). Anna d. 22 June 1893 (sic 15 June 1893).
