TEASLEY GLASCO — The funeral for Ervin P. Teasley, 23, Glasco, will be at 10 Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Glasco, the Rev. Fr. Vering officiating. A rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fouts-Haley Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Glasco. Mr. Teasley was killed Tuesday when a truck he was driving was struck by a train at New Cambria. Salina Journal Tuesday February 21, 1961 Concrete Truck, Locomotive Collide; Glasco Man Killed Ervin F. Teasley, 23-year-old truck driver from Glasco, was killed Tuesday morning when his loaded concrete truck collided with an 180-ton Santa Fe switch engine at a New Cambria grade crossing. Jay Hockley, New Cambria, saw the train hit the Salina Concrete products truck from his car seconds in 300 feet away. "There was nothing a man could do," Hockley said. The accident happened at 9:30 o’clock. The switch engine and caboose were traveling east. He (Teasley) was going south on the New Cambria cutoff from Highway 40. He approached the tracks while the train was coming. The train blew its whistle but the truck never stopped, he just slowed for the rough tracks Hockley said. Hockley estimated that Teasley was traveling 10 to 15 mph. and the train about 10 mph. Truck Torn To Pieces The truck was torn into three major pieces strewed along the tracks for 80 feet. The frame and rear wheels were near the crossing. The concrete mixer full of concrete was laying about 15 feet further east. Eighty feet from the crash was the cab with Mr. Teasley's body laying beside it. B. D. Carrier, the switch engine fireman, said he witnessed the crash from the engine house. "He never did stop," he said. "We threw the engine into emergency stop 350 feet from the crossing. We hit him with the left front of the engine. Then the truck scraped down the side. I don’t know how fast we were going when we hit.” he said. “The mixer must have caught the caboose I thought the caboose would tip over when we hit." he said. Engine, Caboose Damaged Damage to the engine and caboose was estimated at $2000. Three of the train's crew were in the caboose and two were in the cab of the engine. None were injured. The engineer was M. A. Goff, Emporia. A Salina Concrete Products official said Mr. Teasley was on his way to dump a load of cement on the south side of the tracks at the New Cambria elevator. The elevator is about 300 yards east of the crossing. The body was taken to Rush Smith Funeral Home and transferred to the Fort Haley Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Six Killed At Crossing In 1953 Six persons were killed in a car-train accident April 12, 1953, at the New Cambria railroad crossing where Ervin F. Teasley was killed Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. John Lantz and children, Frances and Eddie, and Meredith Seagrove, all of New Cambria, and SSgt. Phillip Seagrove, on leave from a California Air Force Base were victims of the 1953 crash. An eastbound train struck the northbound car in which the six persons were riding. There were no other passengers. The accident occurred on a Sunday afternoon.
