Description	:	Esther "Hetty" Young was the eldest child of Alexander Young and his wife Mary Hays Young of Southampton Farm in Bel Air. At age 16, Hetty married John Watters (age 27) only a few months after the sudden death of her father, Alexander Young. They bought a farm on what is now Rigdon Road, just behind the Wm Watters U. M. Watters (1819-1907), Thomas "George" Watters (1821-1875), John Fletcher Watters (1824-1866), Sarah Elizabeth Watters (1826-1899), Edwin "Dorsey" Watters (1829-1893), and Susan Jane Watters (1829-1888). Only 3 of their children ever married-- Alexander, Mary, and Robert. John & Hetty Watters' farm was near his younger brother, Walter Watters and his wife, Mary Kennard Watters. Walter & Mary were the great-grandparents of Sen. Mary E. W. Risteau, the first woman in Md to serve in the House of Delegates and Senate. Hetty was widowed when her youngest children were only 10 months old. One way she dealt with her hardship and grief was to open her home to Methodist preachers in Cooptown. These early meetings were the beginnings of Eden Chapel and what would later become Wm Watters Methodist Church. One of the stained glass windows in the church building is dedicated to John and Esther Watters. The following Aegis article discusses the original Eden Chapel, predecessor of Wm Watters M.E. Church: Where Eden Town Was. MR. EDITOR: In Dr. George W. Archer’s interesting and valuable paper concerning Old Baltimore and other departed towns of Harford county, an enquiry is made for the site of Eden Town. I think I can throw some light on the subject. Eden Town occupied the site of the present Cooptown, in Marshall’s district. I was present at the dedication of the M. E. Church at Cooptown, about the year 1840-’45. There was some discussion about a name for the new church when Mr. Walter Watters suggested that it be called “Eden” church, because Cooptown was once known as Eden Town. The church was dedicated by Rev. John A. Collins (1801-1857). The first person buried in the graveyard adjoining it was the Rev. John Ball, pastor of the M. E. Circuit, whose home was in Darlington. He died at Thomas Howard’s, on Winter’s Run, near Hanway’s Mill. His remains were afterwards removed to Virginia, his native state. H. R. Watters.
