Read More	Stratford Courier November 23, 1922 Stratford people were shocked last Thursday morning when the news of Miss Esther Berggren's death was first heard here. It was known that her condition was not the best when she went to Chicago the Monday before an operation for goitre, but it was not thought, by the majority at least, that the operation would prove fatal to her. Recently when in Des Moines she consulted a physician regarding the goitre and was advised that she should go through an operation. The goitre was affecting her heart and eyes but this condition had not been noted only during the last few months. Her death was a very sad blow to her mother, who was with her at the hospital in Chicago, and to her aged father here who was left alone to receive the sad news of the death of his daughter. Her many intimate friends in Stratford were also saddened by the sudden passing. The remains arrived from Chicago Friday morning and funeral services were held Sunday from the M.E. Church. The church was filled to overflowing by the many friends who came to pay their last sad tribute to her. The remains were laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery. Esther Leona Berggren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Berggren, was born in Stratford, May 23, 1894 and died Nov. 15, 1922, at the Augustana Hospital in Chicago, while undergoing an operation for the removal of an inward goitre. She was 28 years, 5 months and 22 days old. She graduated from the Stratford High School in 1912 and for some years taught rural schools in the county. Afterwards she entered the Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and following her graduation taught two years in the schools of Anthon, Iowa. Two years ago she accepted a position as a teacher of the 5th and 6th grades in the Stratford Schools and was engaged in this work at the time of her death. She was a most successful teacher beloved by everyone of her pupils as well as by every member of the faculty. Her interest in school work was real, so real that it is truly seldom that one finds a teacher more interested in her school work and her pupils than she was. She was faithful to her work and faithful to her pupils, and they will miss her in the school room. In 1909 she united with the M.E. Church and has since been a hard and faithful Christian worker. At the time of her death she was president of the Epworth League and a teacher in the Sunday School. She lived not long but she lived well for she did what she could. She leaves to mourn her early passing, her aged parents, and one sister, Mrs. S.O. (Selma) Rice of Portland, Oregon, many other relatives and many close friends.
