Read More	Stratford Courier January 3, 1924 J.P. BERGGREN PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY AT 2 A.M. YESTERDAY J.P Berggren passed away suddenly at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, Jan. 2, 1924. The news of his death was a genuine shock to his many friends here. He had been in failing health for some time gradually getting weaker until he was barely able to walk from his home to town. Since the death of his daughter, Miss Esther, a little more than a year ago, his decline has been very rapid, her death coming as a crushing blow from which he never recovered. He was one of the oldest businessmen in Stratford having established his wagon shop in Stratford over forty years ago. He was about 75 years old. Stratford Courier January 10, 1924 OBITUARY Berggren John Peter Berggren was born in Sweden, May 16, 1850, and passed away at the family residence here on Jan. 2, 1924, aged 73 years, 7 months, 17 days. He came to America with his parents when he was 12 years old, the family locating at Moline, Illinois. A few years later they located in the East Marion community. During the year 1881 he was united in marriage to Tilda Quist at Boone and two daughters came to bless this home, namely, Selma Elvira (Mrs. S.O. Rice) of Astoria, Oregon, and Miss Esther, who passed away on the operating table in Augustana Hospital in Chicago on Nov. 15, 1922. Shortly after his marriage he moved to Lake Center, then an inland post office, and engaged in the wagon making business. He lived there for a number of years. In 1883 he moved his family to Stratford and built a small wagon making shop and he had been engaged in that business here ever since, working in his shop, which is one of the oldest business buildings left in Stratford, until a few days before his death. He was one of a family of seven children, three sons and four daughters, and his death leaves but one survivor, a sister, Mrs. Ida Johnson of Stanhope. He leaves to mourn his passing, this sister, his wife, and one daughter and also a grandchild, as well as a host of lifelong friends in this community. While he lived at Lake Center he was postmaster there and after he moved to Stratford was a member of the town council for three years. For over forty years he was constantly in business in Stratford. He established that business here when Stratford was scarcely a remnant of the present town and he had seen the town grow from one containing a few tar paper shacks to one of the most progressive in Iowa with some of the prettiest homes to be found anywhere. Nearly every day during those forty years he has walked to and from his work, a work that for many years and before the advent of the automobile kept him very busy every day and all day long. After wagon repairing fell off he devoted his time to other work in wood working. He had been an industrious and hardworking man, honest and frugal, painstaking in his work, and he closed a busy life after he had earned the rest from his labors for which he had yearned for over a year. He never recovered from the shock of the death of his daughter, Esther, a little more than a year ago, and his decline had been gradual ever since. He was ill but a few days and on Saturday before his death was up town for the last time. Funeral services were held from the home and the M.E. Church last Friday afternoon in charge of Rev. Carl Hammer. Many beautiful floral tributes, among which was a beautiful piece from local business houses, paid a lasting tribute to his memory. Interment was made in Oakwood Cemetery.
