Description	:	Ethel Irene Thies, 87, of Bozeman, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. She was born on Nov. 23, 1922, in Burke County, North Dakota, to Hans and Rachel (Williams) Hanson. She grew up on the family farm, received her education, and then worked out of the family home from the time she was 12. Read More	Ethel Irene Thies, 87, of Bozeman, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. She was born on Nov. 23, 1922, in Burke County, North Dakota, to Hans and Rachel (Williams) Hanson. She grew up on the family farm, received her education, and then worked out of the family home from the time she was 12. On Sept. 17, 1940, she married John William Thies in Burke County, Noth Dakota, and together they raised four daughters. Ethel and Johnnie lived in North Dakota for 21 years before moving to Bozeman in 1961. Ethel was a homemaker and helped Johnnie farm and operate several businesses in North Dakota and Montana. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, an avid bowler, and a volunteer at the Bozeman Senior Center. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends with lots of food and would bake for every holiday. Ethel will be remembered by family and friends for her sharp wit, sense of humor, and famous caramel rolls. She is survived by her daughters, Bev (Dwight) McCarty, of Casa Grande, AZ, Janelle (Dana Zikas) Tillett, of Lynnwood, WA, Pam (Bob) Carlson, of Missoula, and Shelly (Mike) Schlenker, of Ennis; sister, Lorraine Liebl, of Stanley, ND; grandchildren: Kevin Anderson, Kresta House, Lori (Pete) Kerr, Heith Carlson and Bret (Sarrah) Carlson; stepgrandchildren: LeRoy (Stacie) McCarty, Beth Steen, Robbie Schlenker and Cassie Schlenker; six great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Johnnie, in 1972; and seven brothers and sisters. Ethel will be laid to rest at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at Sunset Memorial Park in Belgrade. A Celebration of her Life will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Hope Lutheran Church in Bozeman, followed by a reception in their activities center. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 23, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Memorials may be made in Ethel's name to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
