Ethel May Mallery was born Jan. 21, 1919, on the family farm in Ortley Township of Roberts County, S.D. She grew up there and attended rural Roberts County schools. After completing her education, Ethel worked as a caregiver for area families. On June 25, 1953, she married Ernest Clifford Chell at the Alto Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of rural Summit, SD. They made their home on the Chell family farm in One Road Township of Roberts County, near Pickerel Lake. They farmed there until retiring to Bristol in 1979. Ernest died on Nov. 10, 1995, and Ethel continued to live in Bristol until moving to Langford in August of 1998, and then to Wheatcrest Hills in May of 2005. Ethel was a member of the Christian Missionary and Alliance Church in Waubay, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, and was active in the Women's Missionary Fellowship. She was an avid reader, particularly of the Bible, and at the time of her death she was working on her 14th complete reading of the scriptures. She enjoyed gardening and sewing, especially quilting. She had a real knack for making up games to play with her granddaughters. Ethel is survived by two daughters: Evelyn (Rodney) Tobin of Pierpont, S.D.; Ellen (Douglas) Wilts of Herman, Minn.; five granddaughters: Chelsea Tobin, Rachel Tobin, Shauna Tobin, Carrie Wilts and Kellie Wilts. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Ellen Marie; seven brothers, Martin, Lyle, Willard, Robert, Sylvester, Harvey and Jimmie Mallery; and a sister, Ellenora Hayes.
