Evalena Helgens of Scotch Grove died Tuesday, Aug 3, 1999 at her daughter's home near Mount Vernon, following an extended illness. Evalena Marie Freese was born Feb 8, 1915 near Amber, the daughter of John and Marie Folkers Freese. She received her education in the Black Oak School in Jones County. She later worked as a cook at the Jones County Home. On April 11, 1934, she married Harvey H. Helgens at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Wayne Township. He died April 7, 1948. She continued the farming operation until she retired in 1977. She was a lifelong member of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. She was baptized on Feb. 18, 1915 and confirmed her faith on April 13, 1930. Surviving are three children: Delores (Carl) Ackerman of Mount Vernon; Dean (Sharon) Helgens of Scotch Grove; Marlene (Larry) Coppess of Clarence; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alva Freese of Fairfield Bay, Ark., Louis Freese of Monticello; three sisters, Ella Schwartz of Monticello, Irene Biere of Dubuque, Annette Walton of Plano, Texas. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Berniece Edwards.
