McKay June 4, 1917 - February 8, 2008 Evelyn Grace Wasson was born June 4, 1917, to Samuel Brown Wasson and Eva Florence Hunter-Wasson in the family home in Grand Valley, Colorado. She moved back into that home upon her retirement and, with the exception of five months, lived there the rest of her life. She died February 8 at Mesa Manor in Grand Junction. She was 90 years old. She graduated from Grand Valley High School and soon after, married Stanley D. McKay. During their long committed marriage, they ran sheep "on the mountain', they ran horses on Grand Mesa and they moved to California during the war to work towards the war effort. Upon their return to Grand Valley, various oil shale projects gave them enough security that Evelyn was able to stay at home and raise three children. When the projects ended they bought McKay's Texaco in Grand Valley and later purchased Beaver Lake Lodge in Marble, Colorado until their retirement in 1976. Evelyn served the town of Grand Valley, now Parachute, as a member of the school board and the cemetery association. She served on the Parachute town council during the boom of the 80's and she served Garfield County as an alternate member to the planning board for several years. Mainly, she served as a strong, loved and respected central focus to her family. Evelyn enjoyed her family, traveling, and working in her yard and continued to do all three almost to the very end of her life. In her 80's, we would sometimes find her on a ladder doing something. She and Stanley traveled extensively and she continued after his death, including a trip to China which had always been a dream. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, her son David, her sister Iris Huber, and brothers Harry and Sam Wasson. She is survived by her daughter Evalee (Phil) of Grand Junction; her son Michael (Linda) of Casper, Wyoming; and her grandchildren Connor Gifford, (significant other, Jut), Matthew Gifford (Angelique), Ryan McKay (Kristina), Griffin McKay (significant other, Heather) and Megan McKay and nephews Sam (Sallie) and Hunter (Bonnie) Wasson. Happily she also lived long enough to welcome her two great grandsons, Hunter Gifford and Wyatt McKay. Her first loyalty was to family, her second, to community, and we both are better off because of that commitment. A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 14, from 9 - 11:00 a.m. at the Snell-McLean Funeral Home, Palisade. Funeral Services are at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Grand Valley Christian Church in Parachute, Colorado with burial at the Russey-Hurlburt Cemetery following the services.
