Description	:	Even and Amela Ulven My parents, Even Ulven (1881-1953) who was born at Dunlap, Iowa and Amelia Amunson (1880-1963) who was born at Soldier, Iowa, were married at Soldier, Iowa in 1901. They were the parents of twelve children. Anna 1901-who married Clay Kelley; and later, Ben Winters. Alice 1903- who married La Verne Solberg; Elma 1905 married Galdys Fritz; Clark 1907 died when three years old, accidentally shot. Herman 1909- never married. Cora 1911- married Earl Outhouse Howard. Charles 1918- killed in a car accident 1938. Virgil 1920- married Betty Price. My father worked as a carpenter, at times drove a team and buggy to work, sometimes gone a week at a time. While we lived on a farm south of Soldier, my sister, Anna, and I trapped gophers to earn money for food. We would walk seven miles to Soldier, buy groceries and carry them home. Once we ran and ran to get home before a severe storm hit and just made it when it started raining. Eventually, we moved into Soldier. I finished the ninth grade then worked in the hotel. I met LaVerne Solberg at a fourth of July celebration, in 1920; three years later we were married at Onawa, Iowa, by Rev. Klechner. Shorty, as LaVerne was called, worked on the railroad section for several years. We lived in Moorhead, then, and I still do. In 1936, LaVerne purchases a well drilling business from Grover Rasmussen. In 1942 he lost two fingers on his right hand in a machinery accident, but he continued that work until retirement in 1960. Our son, Donald, took over the business and still operates it. Our only daughter, Joyce, born in 1924, married Earl Ballentyne, their oldest daughter Nancy married Keith Hinkel and has twin boys. Their other children are Barbara who married Nick Goslar; Carol who married Larry Carritt; Richard who married Linda Mathison; and Rodney who married Cindy Michels. Donald 1926 married JoAnn Ewing- their children are Rebecca Anderson; ToNetta Wood; Larry married Lori Olson; Jeffery married Wanda Brewster; and Lisa and Scott. Russell, born 1929, married Nora Burns. He teaches at Hawarden, Iowa; their children are Randy, Robin, Robert, Roger, and Rochelle. Gorden, born 1935, married Janice Hubbard and has four children; Vicky, Micheal, and twins Valerie and Vanna. Jerald, born 1938, married Colleen Rude, their children are Lori, twins Shari and Kari. He later married Carolyn Dunbar, their two boys are Jared and Christofer. They live in Postville, Iowa and he works in a bank. Joyce, Donald nd Gorden live in Moorhead. LaVerne died in June 1980; is buried in the Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead. I am a member of the Lutheran Church, Eastern Star and 55 Plus Club.
