MR BUEHLER was born 13 May 1894 at Sterling NE & grew up on a farm. After graduation from 8th grade, he worked on the farm & then ent-ered Central Wesleyan College in 1916. He toured with a Chautauqua before joining the academic world. In 1923, he received the first master's degree in speech granted from Northwestern University. He saw action in France during World War 1 & was one of 2000 enlisted men & officers selected to study in British universities while awaiting passage home. At Kings College England, he broke the school's high jump record, which had stood for 6yrs. He taught at Washburn University 2yrs before coming to KU in 1935. He was the author of 20 books on debate & public speaking, including a widely used high school-college text, "You & Your Speeches". MrBuehler was a national presidient of Delta Sigma Rho, honorary speech society, from 1942-1953 when he became trustee of the organization. He was secretary of the Missouri Valley Forensic League for 25yrs & belonged to Tau Kappa Alpha & Pi Kappa Delta, national honor societies in forensics. He was secretary of the Missouri Valley Forecsic League from 1933 to 1959. In 1963, he was chosen "teacher of the year" by the Kansas Speech Assn. A library & reading room in Wescoe Hall at KU was named in his honor on his 80th birthday in 1974 & included more than 1000 volumes the professor donated to KU. After his retirement from KU, MrBuehler served as visiting professor at the Universities of Texas, Hawaii & Nebraska & received an honorary doctorate from the latter in 1970. He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church & Scottish Rite. He married Lois Ann Greelees on 21 Mar 1948, she survives. Other survivors include 3 daus: Phyllis Dubus; Rosemary Fraser-both of Bloom-ington IN & Beatrice Jackson-Sausalito; 8 grandchildren & 3 gr grandchildren. Services are pending at Ramsey Funeral Home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cem. The family suggests memorials to the Buehler Speech Lib-rary at KU in care of the KU Endowment Assn or the funeral home.
