Second husband of Sarah Jane Downing Galliher Hoopes. -------- Fairfield Ledger Dec. 25, 1901 Death of Ezra Dow HOOPES Ezra Dow HOOPES, a man who was widely known in this vicinity, died at the home of W. F. DOWNING, three miles northeast of this city, Saturday night. He had been in ill health for a year or more, a sufferer of consumption. Mr. HOOPES was born in Belleville, O., November 9th, 1844. He came to this county with his parents in 1850, was reared on a farm a few miles east of this city, and had made his home in Jefferson county all these years. He was married to Mrs. Sarah J. GALLIHER, who survives him, April 10, 1877. Mr. HOOPES was a member of Company D, 11th Illinois cavalry, his period of service being seven months, or until the close of the Civil war. He was a man of good character, and had many friends among the people and old soldiers of the community. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Episcopal church, with which denomination he had been connected for several years, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. E. Corley preached the sermon, and the body was interred with military honors by George Strong Post, G.A.R. ------- Regarding the inscription on the east facing of this monument for a "Edwin Raymond Hoopes": Probably, but not confirmed, that he was an infant son of Ezra Dow Hoopes and Sarah Jane Downing Galliher Hoopes. His inscription is on the east facing of their headstone. However, it should be understood that while this inscription for Edwin is engraved on this east facing, the burial records for Evergreen Cemetery do not specifically indicate that he was physically buried on this lot. The diagrams of the plot burials do not show him. The inscription could be interpreted as a memorial inscription for him, with burial unknown elsewhere.
