Read More	MRS DIRK SCHAFER PASSED AWAY AT HER HOME IN MONTICELLO, JUNE 5, 1935 Death ended the earthly sufferings of Mrs. Dirk Schafer at her home on South Chestnut street yesterday morning at 11:45 o'clock. She had been in failing health for the past two months. A short time ago Mrs. Schafer suffered a stroke of Paralysis, which with other complications contributed to the cause of her death. Throughout her final illness she was tenderly cared for by her husband and family. Mrs. Schafer was born at Etzel, Ostfriesland, Germany, October 31, 1863. Her parents were Jurgen and Grace Margaret (Tuetken) Gerritts. When an infant she was baptized by the Rev. Hibben at Etzel in the Lutheran faith. The subject of this sketch emigrated to the United States August 15, 1882, at the age of 18 years. She settled at Pekin, Illinois, with some uncles, and was accompanied to this country by her brother, John Gerritts. She later came to Wayne township to visit with some friends and found employment in the home of John Bates in April, and was married October 31, 1887, by the Rev. C. Mardorf. Mr. and Mrs. Schafer became the parents of five children of whom Harm died in 1890, and John in 1901. In addition to her husband, she is survived by Henry of Scotch Grove township, George who lives on the home farm in Wayne township, and Mrs. Carl Gerdes (Hanna) who lives in Cass township. Mrs. Schafer also is survived by the following brothers and sisters: John of Manito, Ill.; George and Mrs. Anna Henrichs of Parma, Mo.; Mrs. George Helle (Minnie) of Peoria, Ill., and Henry of Pekin, Ill. She is also survived by seven grandchildren. Mrs. Schafer was a life-long member of the Lutheran church, and took an active interest in the work of St. Matthew's church of Monticello. She was a member of the Ladies' Aid society, and was always happy in doing her share in the work undertaken by that organization. She passed away with a lasting faith in the teachings of her church. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, for Mrs. Schafer. Short services will be held at the family home at 1 o'clock, and at 1:30 at St. Matthew's church. Her pastor, the Rev. H.L. Adix, will speak in German, and the Rev. UJ. Willms, pastor of Zion's Lutheran church, will speak in English. Burial will be made on the family burial lot by the side of her children in the Wayne Center cemetery.
