Ferdinand Carl Otto Hanke was born July 20, 1850 at Cordeshagen, Pomeravia, Germany, his parents being Carl and Fredericka Hanke. He attended the common school in Germany and on the 28th day of September 1864, having attained the age of 14 yrs was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Cordeshagen after which he went to work with his father who was a carpenter. In May 1869, at the age of eighteen yrs Mr. Hanke emigrated to the US making his way to Ogle County near Dixon, IL, where he worked on a farm for four and one half years. The spirit of Horace Greeley's "Young Man Go West" seized Mr. Hanke and in the year of 1873, longing to try the life of a pioneer, he and his boyhood comrade, August Scheuneman, in a covered wagon, crossed the state of Iowa, traveling rough roads and fording swollen streams and finally reached their destination on a 120 acre prairie farm near post office Milton in Green precinct, Saunders County, about four miles south of Ithaca. This farm he purchased from the railroad company and built a frame house on the same and began farming. During the month of November 1873, through the faithful missionary work of Rev. M. Gruever of the Evangelical Association church, in a revival meeting held in a school house, Mr. Hanke became converted and with nineteen others organized and was a charter member of the Wahoo class of this church in which he remained a faithful member until his passing. In the year 1874, he was united in marriage to Alvina Malvitz, who passed away December 10, 1892. During the month of April 1877, the Wahoo class became the Wahoo Mission of the Evangelical Association church, and Mr. Hanke was chosen exhorter and Sunday School teacher and actively served his church for more than thirty years in other official capacities. He was always interested in the progress and development of his church and wanted it to become more firmly established n the community, hence he leased land upon which there was erected a parsonage and in 1883 was instrumental in having built the Zion Evangelical church buiding three miles southeast of Ithaca. He gave generously of his time, wealth and talents to his church and its institutions. Mr. Hanke did not forget his parents in the father land and after he had established a home for himself in Nebraska, sent for them and they made their home with him until an old age when there were laid to rest in the cemetary near Zion church south of Ithaca. In the year 1894 he was wedded to Katherine Meier who was departed this life the following year. On March 30, 1896, he was married to Ida Jordan, Fremont, NE. For many years Mr. Hanke had served his church faithfully and well and in Octiober 1896 the church bestowed a great honor upon him by choosing him as a delegate to its general conference at Cleveland, OH. They repeated this honor in October 1898 and sent him again as its delegate to the general conference at Chicago, IL. Mr. Hanke became a citizen of this country, took a keen interest in civic affairs, serving as an assessor of Green precinct for twenty-two years, as an officer of the school board of District 102 and District #50 for more than thirty-five years. For many years he was a member of the board of directors of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Saunders County and Vice President of the Farmers State Bank of Ithaca for more than thirty years. As a pioneer Mr. Hanke experienced the hardships and privations of drouth, prairie fires, panics, blizzards and grasshoppers, but he stuck to the task of breaking the sod and continued a tiller of the soil, acquiring many acres of productive land until the year 1913, when he retired from his farm and moved to Ithaca, where he resided when he answered the last call. As a citizen and neighbor he was honored, respected and held in high esteem. As a husband and father he was kind, loving and always faithful. Sixteen times the grim reaper, Death, visited the sanctuary of his household. Fifteen time he stood with bowed head and bleeding heart at the open grave of a departed loved one from his fireside, the last being in 1908, his son Oscar, a lad of nineteen summers. It might be truthfully said that he was "A Man of Sorrows and Acquainted with Grief", but his trust in God and his faith was well founded and like Job, the servant of old, he kept on walking with God who never forsakes his own. Mr. Hanke at the very beginning of his Christian experience, erected a family altar in his home! No day, however busy, or meal was ever begun or ended without first invoking the blessing of Diety. Nothing could have swerved him from this sacred resolution. It made no difference what happened, in presence of his help, the strange sojourning in his midst, the guest and his family, those family worship services were always conducted in a fine spirit of devotion to the great master, and a comfort and inspiration to many who can give testimony to the fact this very hour. No doubt it could be said that Mr. Hanke's home life reflected this motto: "Christ is the head of this house, the silent listener to every conversation, and unseen guest at every meal." Mr. Hanke was a great student, he loved to read, he read and studied his Bible over and over again and it became a daily companion and was his only rule and guide of Faith. He quietly passed away at his home in Ithaca Monday noon October 28, 1935 at the age of 85 yrs, 3 mos, and 8 days. He is survived by his wife, Ida Hanke of Ithaca, five daughters, Lilly Manske of Ceresco, Meta Kruger of Herman, Elsie Scheuneman of Ithaca, Edna Hanke of Ithaca, Nettie Hageman of Ithaca, two sons, Rudolph Hanke of Ceresco and Amos Hanke of Ithaca, twenty-five grand children, eleven great grand children and many other relatives and host of friends to mourn his passing. Funeral Services were held on Thursday afternoon at the Evangelical church with Rev. R Heim in charge assisted by Rev. Jansen. Pall bearers were Ernest Scheuneman, Albert Hanke, Fred Wagner, August Jordan of Herman, Harold Meierhenry of Arlington and Anton Slobb of Fremont. Burial was in Indian Mound Cemetery Ithaca. This tribute was written by a nephew of the deceased, Ed Schiefelbein of Wahoo, NE. It appeared in the Wahoo Democrat on Thursday, November 7, 1935.
