The interrment (sic) will be made in Evergreeen cemetery (sic. actually buried in the adjacent Old Fairfield City cemetery). ---------- Note: the Fairfield Tribune obituary was published the week following his death, so while the obituary was published on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 1906 and referred to his death on 'last Tuesday afternoon', that was actually meant for Tuesday, Feb. 13, 1906. Following is the fully revised and transcribed content of that obituary (a previous version was heavily edited): Fairfield Tribune Wed. Feb. 21, 1906 Page 8 col. 2 Florence Scannell Dead. Florence G. Scannell was born in Kerry County, Ireland, May 18, 1842, and died at his home west of town last Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of a few months. In 1863 Mr. Scannell came to America and settled in New York. He enlisted and served two years in the civil war. He was a member of the G.A.R. and his funeral was attended in a body by members of the local order. Shortly after his return, on March 7, 1867, he was united in marriage to Abagail Casey (sic. Abigal Casey. They came to Jefferson County in 1869 and have since made this their home. To them were born twelve children, all of whom, with the mother remain to mourn the death of husband and father. Eleven of the children were present at the funeral; one son, T. M. Scannell, in the west, did not receive the news in time to reach here. Those present were: MRS. C. D. Gilchrist, Florence G., and D. J. Scannell of Davenport; J. W. of Ottumwa; W. E. and Joe, of Muscatine; Mrs. Will Thoma, of Libertyville; R. M. of Rock Island; Emmet (sic) of Chariton and Hugh and Paul, of this city. During the last months of his life Mr. Scannell again received the sacraments of the Roman Catholic church, in which faith he was reared, and died a peaceful death. Deceased was a skilled workman in brick and stone. Funeral services in St. Mary's Catholic church last Friday morning, Mass being celebrated and sermon preached by the pastor, Rev. Father Hogan. The remains were laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery (sic. buried in public grounds section of Old Fairfield City cemetery). --------- Jefferson County Republican Fri. Enlisted in the Union Army and served to the close of the war in a New York regiment. Shortly after the war he came to this county.
