Simms died on July 3, 2011, in Palm Springs, after a short illness cause by a fall. Born to Roy and Gertrude Fryer on a farm near Villisca, Iowa, on Feb. 22, 1917, she was 94. She earned her degree in 1938 from the University Of Iowa in Iowa City, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and a violinist in the university symphony. A middle-school teacher, she taught in Iowa until a move to California in late 1940s to prepared officer training course material in Monterey, where she met and married Ed Simms of Ceres. She taught at Ceres' Walter White Junior High for eight years. After being widowed, she settled in Davis 1967 and taught in West Sacramento — at West Acres Junior High and Golden State Middle School — until she retired. She had been living in Palm Springs for almost a year. She collected and traded in antique china and crystal in retirement. She loved her cabin at Lake Tahoe, enjoyed visiting San Francisco, travel to Europe and many road trips to Iowa to see family there. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Simms, and her only sibling, Fred Fryer of Iowa. She is survived by her children, Jim, Scott and Susan Simms; grandchildren Logan and Tansy Leiser; sister-in-law Anabel Fryer; and several nieces. At her request, there will be no funeral.
